one of my favorite headcanons about Kon is how in the future (think 20s) he’s more of a Martha Kent in terms of decor and all that. and one can appreciate this headcanon because it’s sweet but I love it because:
• when he popped out of the tubes, Kon was immediately in the limelight. cameras everywhere, insisting he was the next Superman. quickly, he was thrown into some sort of teenage heartthrob-media star role for the world to see and to judge.
• because of this, and also lack of proper guidance, he was swept into a corrupt man’s schemes and paraded around the world with poor brand deals and excessive exploitation.
• with all eyes on him, he was constantly aware of how he came across to the world and craved attention and love. hence, the playboy persona and desire for the finer things.
• Kon had to really get into all that to appease Tana, whom he perceived as the only person who’d truly love him (at the time). he had to prove to her (and Rex, and Roxy, and the world) that he was cool and worth their attention. he bent himself into so many different shapes to be what they wanted.
• Kon himself couldn’t even know what he wanted to be himself—he’d been in the public eye literally since he popped out of the lab. he only knew how others wanted him to be, and assumed that was the way to go.
• but then he meets the Kents, and his world is turned upside down. he gets his hands dirty in the farm; he learns how to do chores around the house. most importantly, he finally understands that his image is not his worth. The Kents love him no matter what he wears or whom he flirts with. they don’t care about Superboy, they like Kon.
• and suddenly he doesn’t need the brand deals and the girlfriends. he keeps his leather jacket because he likes it. Martha teaches him cross-stitching and he learns to sew his own patches on it. he learns woodwork from Jonathan and, eventually, gets tips on hero-ing from Clark. he joins Young Justice and gains friends who like his personality instead of his hair. and now he has things tying him to the world that don’t have anything to do with keeping up appearances or trying to meet impossible standards.
• Kon and Tim butted heads when they started working together, partly because Tim couldn’t stand Kon’s superficial attitude and cocky persona. little did he know that Kon was so much more than that. of course, Kon could still be impulsive and confident, but it was a became more endearing when paired with his unhindered earnest curiosity and compassion. in the back of Kon’s mind, he saves this fact for bad days—Tim prefers him when he’s not performing. he’s more than a TV star and has proof.
• he discovers that he likes silly socks. he likes soft t-shirts and loose flannel and converse shoes. he enjoys his natural curls instead of the carefully-gelled style that Tana preferred.
• he gives homemade gifts and food to his friends for special occasions or just because he feels like it. his self-worth no longer hinges on what he has to give, so now he gives gifts simply because he wants to show his appreciation for everyone he loves. Tim in particular has received a multitude of knitted scarves and apple pies.
• when he gets his own place, he’s at first lost on how to decorate it. but Tim encourages him to take his time and not try to force anything, even asserting that he doesn’t have an obligation to display any housewarming gifts if he doesn’t want to. after a while, the rooms fill up with framed photos of loved ones and furniture made by him and Pa. the kitchen houses colorfully patterned dishes and a kettle painted to look like a rooster, along with dishcloths with quirky designs and some of Ma’s precious china.
• over all this time, Kon feels more and more like himself. he’s become comfortable in his own skin and confident in who he is. he prefers cozy over stylish. and he doesn’t feel bad about it.
