In TROS, Kylo Ren was written by JJ and Terrio but Ben Solo was written by Adam Driver. He got across his entire personality and emotions and new outlook with no lines in an otherwise very poorly-directed film
Adam’s always been absolutely incredible at the show, don’t tell kind of acting that a character as conflicted and introspective as Kylo requires in order for people to understand his emotions and inner turmoil.
The look he gives Rey when he removes his helmet and later when she manages to get inside his head; the heartbreaking conflict he feels when faced with the opportunity to kill his father and then later his mother; the obscenely erotic eye sexin’ with Rey and the naked, broken look he gives her in the hut & in the throne room.
Him and Daisy have always been able to convey more with a single look than most people in entire conversations, and because TLJ was so expertly written and directed, it looked seamless.
But in TROS, Kylo is given such empty, mustache-twirling evil guy dialogue that it’s a relief when he’s allowed to remove his mask and we can see Adam emote. And even with the mask on, the sassy finger wave he does every time he’s bossing someone around is a precious quirk.
You are absolutely right when you say that Ben belongs solely to Adam, because a single shoulder shrug and a nod was enough to show us exactly who Ben Solo is, who he has always been underneath Kylo Ren’s heavy mask, and that was all Adam.
