(Juno Steel ficlet, set during Juno Steel and the Vanishing Act)
For some reason unfathomable, stream night had a staying power to it. It has only been a few weeks since their little crime family had bid their bittersweets, but Buddy and Vespa’s life had changed. It was quieter, for one thing; both in literal noise and in excitement level. Buddy was pretty happy with both those particular developments; she missed them all terribly, but it turned out retirement was suiting her well, for the time being.
Their lives had changed, but not stream night.
Second day of the martian month, every single one of them, Vespa switched on the old battered wide-screen of the lighthouse, and tuned it to a stream. Sometimes they picked one that looked interesting, but a fair amount of the time they just picked randomly.
Tonight, it was Buddy’s turn. She’d picked the Theater of the Heart and Mind, which, from its description, showed lesser known short plays as they were performed across the system.
While it was a sure savior to their egos that the cast of each play would not hear Vespa’s judgements, Buddy personally was looking forward to the carnage. Perhaps more than she should, as an appreciative of the arts.
But love was a powerful thing, and Buddy couldn’t help but admire Vespa’s ability to viciously dissect.
All the same, the cackling was getting a little worrying.
“Vespa, darling, what are you watching?” She cupped a Lunar Sunset in each hand, having just finished making them. As she turned the corner, Buddy caught a glance at the screen. Three figures stood in a single spotlight, all looking vaguely confused at a piece of glass the tallest was holding.
“An-an idiot!” Vespa said between fits of laughter.
“-Theiverize yon shining chimes!”
An auto-captioner helpfully described what ‘The Investigator’ was saying, to the best of its ability.
“My, my.” Buddy said, smiling. “Look at our little stream star. Save this one to the harddrive, will you?”
Vespa grinned. “Already did.” She then began laughing again, and Buddy joined in.
Well, if Juno and Rita ever decided to stop in for stream-night, she knew what they’d be watching.
