NAME :  Joshua Gillespie

RESIDENCE :  flat in London

NUMBER OF BLANKETS :  Before the Coffin, two to three, depending on the temperature.  After the Coffin, he found it more comfortable to sleep with just one to two.

NUMBER OF PILLOWS :  Two.

TYPE OF CLOTHING :   No shirt, just boxers no matter the temperature.

DO THEY SLEEP WITH COMPANY?   Sometimes.  He dates and has casual relationships so sometimes those guys stay over.  Sometimes they don’t.  He also doesn’t mind sharing a bed with close friends since he doesn’t have the space for a guest room.  Briar and him will always share the bed when she’s over, for example. 

DO THEY SLEEP BETTER WITH COMPANY?   Depends.  Sleeping with Briar tends to be an oxymoron more often than not; it becoming more like a middle school sleepover where no one actually gets any sleep than anything else.  Joshua has no illusions about how, despite all the cliches otherwise, sleeping with another human being can be... difficult. 

DOES IT MATTER WHERE THEY SLEEP?   Yes.  While he has passed out on many a surface, as he got older he much prefers an actual bed.  He’s still prone to the unwise decisions what lead him to waking up in a bathtub, but his back and neck are more loud about their protests than when he was 20.  He’ll take the couch without too much fuss, though, if necessary.

WHAT DO THEY DO IF THEY CANNOT FALL ASLEEP?   Read, listen to music.  He might make some warm milk or tea. 

FREQUENT DREAMS, NIGHTMARES :   Doesn’t have many reoccurring dreams.  He does have reoccurring nightmares after the Coffin, though he never remembers the contents with any clarity.  He usually just wakes up gasping for air, hands at his throat and soaked in sweat.  It’s more frequent when it rains and he’s also more likely to sleepwalk when it rains. 

DEEP SLUMBER OR NAPS :  Tends to sleep like the dead once he’s out - barring nightmares or sleepwalking episodes.  Naps usually make him feel worse and more groggy so he’d rather just slam his body with caffeine in the moment and then conk out at bedtime.

WHEN DO THEY SLEEP :   Usually goes to bed 10-11PM on workdays to be ready for work at 7AM.  Weekends are an absolute crapshoot; he may stick to the schedule, may stay up late doing shit on his own, may go out and party.

WHAT COULD WAKE THEM UP :   Outside of the obvious (nightmares, alarms, someone trying to wake him), the cold.  He’s particularly sensitive after the Coffin, having drilled in that the cold means he’s gotta wake up.

Gerry lowers the paper as soon as Gillespie hits him with the confirmation that it, in fact, looks familiar.  “I actually start with universities in a lot of my own work,” he explains.  Universities, public libraries, used bookstores…  Leitners have a way of ending up in places where people will easily get a hold of them. Universities are one of his go-tos because the books like to prey on the curious and the hapless students just trying to pass.  “It wasn’t hard to find—never is if you know where to look.”

He rifles through the pages of the paper, not settling to read any of the paragraphs into which Joshua no doubt poured a lot of love and attention.  He does not have any interest in architecture himself.  The work of Robert Smirke doesn’t cause him nearly as many problems as the work of Jurgen Leitner does, and anyway, buildings are a lot messier to burn than books.

“I’ll admit, I haven’t actually read it in its entirety—sorry.”  But the apology sounds anything but sincere.  He never was very good at that, faking that kind of emotion.  His bedside manner, or whatever one wants to call it, has always been found lacking.

“I’m actually most interested in…”  He trails off as he flips to the last page, focusing on that much more intensely than anything else.  “…your sources…”  Given how similar the work of Smirke and Leitner are, both wanting to find balance, stability, in wholly unstable and unbalanced forces, it can hardly be considered a surprise that there is occasionally some overlap.

“I’m looking for a particular book,” he explains, “and I’m chasing down any lead I can get a hold of, including your paper.”  He pinches the sheet between his thumb and index finger right on the title—Creators Without Fear—and turns it around so Joshua can see.  “This one.  I know it’s a long shot, but anything you remember about it—where you got it, where you returned it, if there was anything… off—would help.”

Joshua squints at the title and then holds out a hand for the whole paper.  Flipping through to find where he used the source would jog his memory better than the title alone; though he doubts being able to recall anything helpful.  It’s been years, no telling where things floated off to.

Once he finds a particular reference, though, a few pieces lock into place.  “Yeah, yeah, I think that one was from the university library itself.”  Not the first book he’d picked up, but it was pretty early on before he got stuck wading through more letters and newspapers and blueprints than he’d cared to.

“Don’t think you’ll find it there again, though, it didn’t have a university sticker on it, if I’m recalling right, feel like they said something about it being a misplaced inter-library loan?”  A shrug.  “Outside of that, don’t remember anything weird about it save it being a rather eclectic collection of individuals from what I saw flipping through trying to find what I needed about Smirke.”

He’s slightly surprised that he’s recalled this much about some random book from years ago.  Then again, he’s eighty percent sure that the same day he brought the book back to his flat, he let a friend attempt to give him a lip piercing before dropping acid and that experience might have made it stick.  Still has the tiny scar.

Of all the things that he did in university to resurface so much later, Joshua had least expected this one.

“Yeah, I wrote that essay on the various factors, beliefs, and philosophies influencing Smirke's architecture.”  Honestly, he hasn’t thought about the thing since he graduated. Never wanted to write the thing to begin with but a professor ( and a stipend ) had been persuasive enough.  It hadn’t even crossed his mind when he’d gone to the Magnus Institute to give his statement regarding the coffin and he’d spend months in the library there because they had the most primary sources regarding the architect.

“Surprised you managed to find the thing, though,” he scratches his beard, “never was published anywhere except in the university.”  A fact that did not and does not break his heart at all.

“Dunno how well I can answer questions after this long but, I’ll give it my best shot.”
