God, you just look like pure sex to me.
“...Cool.”
Brody: People always ask me: are you going to get that leg checked out, and I always said the same thing.
Brody: How dare you speak to me.
Dear Diary, how are you? I am fine. Ugh, okay I’m not fine. You got me. God, you’re good.
River, probably.
Logan: I have an idea!
River: We are not going to burn anyone.
Logan: I don't have any ideas.
River: Tell me what you consider your best quality?
Brody: I’m a surfing prodigy.
Logan: I don’t answer stupid questions.
Holden: I can spot a lie.
Nash: My eyes. Oh and also my butt.
Nash: Not everyone is going to think I'm pretty, and that's okay.
Nash: They're wrong, though.
Declan: You remember one time, I liked you?
Nash: No?
Declan: Good cause it never happened!

A smile. That was a good start. River wasn’t going to elbow him in the face… again. At least not yet anyway. It was early in the day and anything could happen. But the smile was a good start. Something that made Declan’s heart warm. The blonde should smile more often. It suited him.
He snorted as he tried to contain his laughter. A quick shake of his followed as he tried to compose himself. “Look, that’s how I want to go when the time comes – beaten to death by a dildo, but today’s not that day.” Not wanting to play out the dramatics anymore, he produced the bottle of whiskey. It was enough for the two of them to share. And then some if they weren’t stranded on a mysterious island.
He shuffled in his place and cleared his throat suddenly feeling awkward. “You said you missed whiskey. I figured this is the least I could do. Don’t beat me with the bottle or anything. I still got some life to live.” He plopped down next to River and held out the bottle.
“Guess I can think of worse ways.” River shrugged. Example number uno - dying on a fucking island with your body mangled by an unknown monster and strung up like a sock puppet up on some damn tree. That sounded like a real awful way to go. River pushed his hands through his locks and promised he wouldn’t think of that for the rest of the day.
Declan’s awkwardness didn’t make him any less suspicions. When had he seen the guy do just about anything awkward - Declan King practically spelled boldand pushing boundaries, considering the guy had some snarky comment always at the ready. Still, River was willing to suspect that when all the bets were off the guy was just this - tired, awkward, and a fucking godsend River decided the moment his eyes landed on the whiskey.
“Jesus fuck, Declan. I could kiss you right now.” River half moaned and took the bottle staring at it for a long while when Declan sat next to him. River looked at the other man with a pinched sort of expression. “Please lie to me and tell me you didn’t do something that would make me feel guilty for this.” He pushed his shoulder into Declan’s stating frankly: “Thank you. You wanna pop it open?”

It had taken some time to find whiskey. Of course River had to be specific in the type of alcohol he wanted. Declan had scored the beach – weird things seemed to wash up on shore all the time. But no, it had been some blonde bimbo on the island who had the secret whiskey stash. It wasn’t hard to seduce the man. He was all to eager to stick his dick in any of Declan’s warm holes. He preferred when they were eager – it meant a quick turn around. Keeping a gay celibate for a week did no favors for their stamina. Probably a gross overestimation, but not wrong when it came to Gordon or Gary.
With whiskey in hand, Declan scoured the island for River. It was the least he could do for the man who saved his life. He wasn’t worth saving, but somehow the blonde believed he was. And Declan wasn’t about to be ungrateful, not for his life or to the medic.
Readjusting his sunglasses, he scoured the beach. Maybe the big oaf had wandered into the jungle to relieve himself or cry. Maybe a combination of both. About to give up and try again later, Declan spotted River lounging against a large rock. Hiding the bottle behind his back, he slinked towards the man.
“Hey, big guy. I got a surprise for you.” He flashed his best smile as he finished closing the distance between them.
River stared at the shore like he could evaporate water on sight. The rock doing something awful to his back that he would end up regretting later tonight but for now he was too busy lost in his own thoughts to mind that.
Too much was going on, and River could make sense of very little of it. He was never the believing kind - his mother had her...spirituality, on a good day he was willing to ignore her, but even so, they’ve gotten in enough arguments over it. It was a little hard for him to wrap his mind around the idea of mystery monsters that left behind blood messages. Then again the possibility that they weren’t alone here was not so much of a possibility anymore but hard fucking fact and River assumed it was people - it had to be. It fucking had to be.
Declan’s voice brought him out of the dark route of his thoughts.
“Hm?” River muttered before he gave Declan a once over, instinctively smiling at the huge grin that the other was sporting. “I swear Declan if you whip out a dildo from behind your back I will beat you to death with it.”
holdenhartless:
His hand hurt. It was a grounding sort of pain – like the bruise encircling his wrist that had already started to fade. Pain was real. Holden understood it; both the physical and mental aspects of it. So he clutched onto it, felt the harsh spikes of it, and he breathed easier. He had spent so much of his life feeling numb; pushing others away, protecting his heart by simply not caring. But, in his self-induced solitude, pain had also become a comfort; something to remind him he wasn’t an empty, hollow shell.
River disrupted this part of him – the part that didn’t care about anyone other than himself. Holden didn’t want to understand it. And he knew, if he looked closely, he would be able to find the name of it with ease. He simply chose not to. Maybe that was selfish, maybe it was self-serving, or perhaps it was self-deluding.
Ignorance was bliss, after all.
And then there was River, actions in stark contrast to his words. Even as he snarled at Holden to go to Dr. Madsen, he snatched up Holden’s hand, turning it towards the sun as he inspected it. He even reached for his first aid kit, one that’d definitely seen better days, even while he bitched. It made Holden feel warm, heart fluttering softly beneath his ribs.
Dammit.
“I don’t need a keeper,” he drawled, looking River up and down with a purposeful slowness. “Though, the case could be made that you need one, Major Lily White.” It had made a bizarre amount of sense that River was military. Holden didn’t know how he hadn’t put the pieces together sooner. The hero complex, the willingness to run head first into danger and ask questions later. River was every bit the solider.
That sat like an ugly, heavy weight on Holden’s chest. The sensation felt odd, out of place, and unusual. Holden wanted to protect River, most especially from himself. A feeling like that was dangerous. It meant Holden cared, even as he so desperately wished he didn’t.
So he did the only thing he could: he acted like an asshole.
But first, he sat down, let himself enjoy the warm coarseness of River’s hand on his, the soft flutter of his heart, the damn butterflies in his stomach. Then he chased such a gentle feeling away with the sanguine tilt of his mouth. His words tasted like ash in his mouth. “The problem is, Lily,” he said, a teasing lit to his tone, “I don’t find Dr. Madsen nearly as fun to piss off.” His smirk only grew as his eyes crinkled. “Nor do I have any desire to press my mouth to his. You, however,” he trailed off as he gave a one shouldered shrug. “Let’s just say I picked a White.”
“Yeah, well you don’t act like it.” He wondered if Holden was sent here to be his personal torture. Fuck mysterious island monsters that crept in the jungle - it was Holden that was going to do him in. With his uncanny knack of just knowing things about him and those damn smirks that River was sure would haunt him in the afterlife.
He tore into the bandage in silence, eyes lowered appearing way too preoccupied with his work to look up at Holden. God he hoped that the other man would get the hint. But he didn’t. Of course, he didn’t. That teasing draw of his voice slid all the way down through River’s spine and settled in some permanent warmth in his stomach. River poured some of the antiseptic on a cotton swap and sadistically took no little pleasure as he patted it down the cut.
He really didn’t need to know about the differences between him and Masden, for all he cared Holden could’ve been just as fine there. The flare of something very unhealthy in his stomach served as a reminder that this may not have been the complete truth but whatever - he could lie to himself if he wanted. River was a grown ass man, he could live in denial.
If he had looked up maybe River would’ve been more prepared for his words, if he’d been able to catch a glimpse of that damn smirk on Holden’s mouth. But River was stubborn to the very end, his fingers halted stuttering over Holden’s damn cut and he cleared his throat.
“Don’t.” He said in a clipped warning tone. What the fuck was he thinking? River felt like he wanted to cry or maybe like he wanted to do good on those desires of Holden’s and just give in, see just how that mouth of his tasted. With how long he was taking with the cleaning the wound Holden’s palm was going to be the cleanest place in this whole island. River’s fingers trailed up, thumb pressed at Holden’s pulse point in a touch that was far too gentle, more so than River thought himself capable of. He shook his head. “Just don’t. Whatever you think you’re doing with this, Holden. Just don’t.” He did look up this time - more silent warnings. River was an island of his own - untouchable, distant.
He glued the cut over, even though it probably didn’t need that extra precaution, silently River reached for the bandage to cover it up.
“I can’t do this, Hart.” River forced the words out, his voice sounding strange to his own ears. “Whatever ... this is.” He wasn’t sure if Holden was doing this just because he thought it would make River squirm because it did - he felt it so physically: his heart raced in his chest, head light and dizzy. “Now is not the time.”
chord-white:
Of course River had a snide reply. It wouldn’t be River if he didn’t. It was comforting to Chord that, as much as his brother was freaking him out, he still had it in him to return snipes, regardless of how little enthusiasm was behind it. Chord stepped back from River, his expression a blend of amusement at how flustered River was, and concern that he had had such an extreme reaction to whatever had happened out in the jungle. Even the way River was looking at him was disconcerting: parental, worried, as usual, but also…lost? Chord didn’t know what to make of it, and actually reached forwards to snap his fingers in front of River’s eyes to make sure that he was alert and okay. A part of him still hoped it was heatstroke.
❝You want me to stay away from our water source, and at some point the only place to get edible food? The place where we can bathe and wash our clothes without getting all crusty from the gross-ass salt water?❞ Chord asked sarcastically, defiance laced in his words like he was a teenager again. ❝Look, I’ve been dumb in the past, but even I know that dead bodies equals danger. You don’t need to baby me, dude, I have this, remember?❞ Chord reminded River smugly, pulling out the machete he had saved and obsessively guarded from the shipwreck that he kept tucked into his (not his, one that he found) belt and fastened with rope (also found). He gave it a few experimental swings as if that was enough to look like he knew what he was doing with it.
River’s face contoured with annoyance, slapped his brother’s fingers away. This was familiar at least, the physicality that came with having grown up together. He would’ve punched Chord’s shoulder too, if he weren’t distracted.
“Yes.” River ground out. “Was I not clear enough? If you have to go to the jungle you bring me with you. You’re not going out there alone anymore and that’s the last I am going to hear about it.”
He gave a loud snort at his brother’s statement. It didn’t matter how Chord had changed (admittedly - he had in the last few years) River still knew his brother had a tendency to ignore reason and follow his impulse on more than just one occasion. The machete (a fucking machete of all things) did little to convince River of the soundness of his arguments, least of all - of his maturity.
“Stop waving that thing around, you’re going to end up hurting yourself for all I know.” River almost bit Chord’s head off the first day after the crash for even thinking about taking that damn thing with him. Now? He thought it was a good thing he did. “Look, it’s more than just the dead bodies, alright. Whatever is out there, it’s not going to go away just because you can swing a fucking machete around. I need to know you’re staying on the shore, Chord. Okay, please?”
