customer, having been in like for ten minutes, gazing at our menu: so what do i do?
me: i mean its a. you buy food here. so tell me the food that you want
customer: so do i pick three?
me: i dont understand what ur saying, three of what
customer: i want three of these appetizers, but as sides, in an order
me: okay. i can technically do that but. they are all appetizers and i cant alter the portion size, so if i ring you up for that, its going to cost you like forty dollars and ur gonna yell at me
customer: ive started yelling at you
me: look the food is helpfully organized into dishes, sides, and appetizers. just pick a dish and two sides
customer: i want four sides, and no dishes
me: there is no way for me to ring that up so that it doesn’t cost way too much and also confuse our non english speaking head chef, who will come out here and beat me to death for ringing up a stupid order
customer: whats THIS ///pointing at visible food
me: its chicken, ma'am
customer: i want this, but with mushrooms
me: youve described an item that isnt on the menu. we cant just. you understand that we have a finite number of ingredients that we use to make a finite number of foods, right?
customer, pointing to an option helpfully labeled as gluten free: does this have gluten?
me: when it has a G next to it that means it has no gluten
customer: can you make this, but without gluten?
me: no, im sorry, we cant do that.
customer: okay, i just want wine then
me: okay, which wine from our list?
customer: wine.
me, paid by the hour and willing to stand here and answer questions all day: there are a lot of people behind you in line
aka "some cool trans women got airtime in 1973 to tell their own stories, and I sure have feelings about it"
anything that contains the phrase “secret BBC memo reveals” intrigues me automatically ngl but I want you all to know that as far as I can gather, the facts are even better than this headline
which is to say, this was part of an initiative in the early 1970s that not only featured marginalized groups on BBC programming, but made moves towards handing them editorial control – the BBC had to approve proposals, but after that, the station’s role was primarily to provide technical resources, facilities, and copyright handling. (another notable program under this initiative featured Black teachers discussing racism in the school system, and a link to that – plus discussion of the hurdles it faced – can be found here).
the program on trans experience was aired in 1973.
The programme, featuring trans women, began: “Jokes about ‘the operation’ are all that most people know about transexualism [sic]. Tonight’s group discuss their situation in a more serious and comprehensive way, and draw attention to the many difficulties they endure”.
you can watch Open Door: Transex Liberation Group here (as well as other archived LGBTQ programming from BBC).

me: 1930s traveling hobo crossed with a 1980s washed up carnie - we think there might be some french mime in there on the hobo side

“One of my favorite moments during a trip out West took place as I was leaving a national park. The sun was setting and there was a beautiful, lone mountain at the entrance of the park. As I was driving by it, I felt compelled to stop and offer tobacco to honor this place.
I got out of the car and sat and looked at the sun setting in the sky. A Native American man drove up and parked next to me. He was tall and handsome with two silver-grey braids going down his back. He was watching the sunset as well, and we began to talk. He shared with me the significance of this mountain and why it is important to his people. I was filled with gratitude as he shared this story with me, about this area that meant so much to him and his tribe. In my pocket was a package of organic tobacco I had bought in order to give offerings. Opening the package, I asked him if he would like some tobacco to offer to this place. He said yes and that he was thankful I had thought to bring tobacco as a gift.
We both held our tobacco and said prayers before offering it to the wind. We stood for a few minutes in quiet. As we began conversing again, there were two birds circling overhead. We looked up, stopping our conversation to see what kind of birds they were. They flew lower and lower until they were just above us and we could see them clearly.
As we watched appreciatively, two beautiful hawks circled over us for a few minutes and then slowly started flying away together. We looked at each other and smiled.
He said, “That was very auspicious, a sign from Great Spirit.” I nodded quietly in agreement. “
