“exactly, without the swelling and redness you’ll look good as new…almost.” the ice might held lighten the bruising but the boy would probably still be stuck with them for a few days. fallon laughed a little, “your dad is a smart guy, he teaches a pretty good lesson.” she smiled back at him, “no problem, my father’s a doctor. he’d be very disappointed if i didn’t use my first aid skills for good. you can make it up to me with cheese fries.” 

“Almost is better than not at all. I will take it.” River nodded, savouring the feeling of the ice against his skin. Up until this point, he hadn’t realized how much his nose had been throbbing. “He’s a good egg, my dad. Not as badass as yours, since being a doctor is pretty badass, but he’s great. Weirdly smart but also very cryptic, if you know what I mean?” Switched the ice to the other side of his face, River laughed. “Cheese fries, got it. I can definitely spring for some cheese fries. I’ve heard the pub makes some pretty good ones.”

“Yeah, this look is called Thriftstore Chic, but thank you. Nice to know that I don’t stick out like a sore thumb at least. And honestly? She’s a legend. Definitely a legend. Most kids get told horror stories about the boogie man or whatever, but I was kept in line by my dad threatening to call Grandma is I misbehaved. I swear she’s a nice lady but you don’t cross her if you want to live a long life. And sure, I’ll text it to you. He’s a good guy and his wife will probably try and feed you while you’re there, so it is a win win.”

Nicollo stared down at the female before him, a slightly bored expression on his features as she continued to speak to him, saying how she wouldn’t be another one of his toys. “Sweetheart,” he drawled out, that Italian accent coming through with a roll of his tongue, the blank expression now replaced by a smirk. “For you to be one of my toys, you’d have to be a decent fuck and sadly, you’re not. I’m sure starfish would be active in bed than you were.” He finally shot back, watching as her eyes widened and she pushed past him and let out a small, smug chuckle. “Always thinking they mean more than a warm body.”

Sometimes, River was not entirely sure how he had befriended (was that even what to call this?) Nicollo. River had been drawn to the fact that Nicollo was, in a sense, his own man. He didn’t do what his parents said just because they said it, and when it came to career goals this was actually kind of impressive. He wasn’t sure what his parents said of his treatment of women, but that was definitely less... impressive. “Maybe dial it back a notch, yeah? Feelings are a thing and all that... and I’m pretty sure at this point you are gonna get someone’s angry ex or future boyfriend to come in swinging.”

                    “ you look like a rich dude so i understand why they ever tried to rob you. looks like luck wasn’t on their side, it was on yours. honestly, i’m surprised there’s not many robberies on campus considering some of the students here love to FLASH their money. hapkido? the korean martial arts stuff? i’ve heard about it. apparently it’s really popular and trendy. it’s the cool thing to do these days. ”

“How exactly do I look like a rich dude? Though I guess I should take that as a compliment. I don’t know, maybe campus security does its job a little better where there is real money in it for them? Or maybe just dumb luck. Who knows. And yeah, that stuff. Though honestly if I were to get any Korean martial arts training I’d get it from my grandma. I’ve seen her beat people off with brooms before, and she’s, like, eighty. Unfortunately she still lives in Seoul so it is kind of a long distance learning thing, so my guy in town is probably a better option.”

“well that’s good, i think it’ll heal just fine.” fallon said with a laugh. “i don’t think it looks that bad thankfully.” she said with a nod as they approached the cafeteria. “i’m just a little small, i have arm strength though i could do it if i had to.” she teased. “thank you for taking my size into consideration, let me grab you some ice.” she told him softly before walking up to the counter and grabbing some from the woman behind the counter. walking back out she handed it out to him, “here, this will help.”

“I am sure it will be fine. Nothing broken, so once the swelling goes down it won’t look like I ran into a brick wall anymore.” The bruising might take a bit longer, but that was a bridge to be crossed later. “Honestly, I wouldn’t want to get in a fight with you. Never underestimate the small ones, that is what my dad always said.” He waited patiently as Fallon went off in search of some ice, returning promptly, ice in hand. Putting the ice to his face, River smiled, “Thanks. I guess I owe you one.”

jesse laughed a bit as he spoke. “please don’t break any machines, neither of us can afford to have it fixed.” he joked, but in reality that joke was the truth. with both boys being scholarship students, it’s take months to pay something like that off. “please be delicate at the gym.” he said with another laugh. “if you stored you bookmarks in the books, wouldn’t you be less likely to lose them?”

“I make no promises, but I will try not to break anything,” River assured Jesse. “If I do, I’ll just... double down on babysitting and barkeeping or something. But hopefully that won’t be necessary. If I can break something that easily, it was obviously broken to begin with.” Not necessarily true, but that was what he was going with. “Okay, true. But bookmarks are like socks. They like to vanish on you even though you know where you put them but, boom. Suddenly they are gone.”

Alice merely shrugged her shoulder, she’d never quite understood so many people’s senseless need to help other people, no one had ever reached out to help her. “So you can beat up by her boyfriend waiting in the sidelines?” She pointed out. Chuckling lowly at his question, shaking her head. “No, I see it as an opportunity to pay someone to fill my glass back up for me.”

“I am not really big on the whole beating people up thing. I’m more of a mitigation than an agitation kind of guy, you know? ” River said, honestly. Though her next comment kind of confused him. “I don’t think you can buy a full glass, at least not a figurative one. You’ve got to figure that part out yourself.”

“yeah, if they had a bit more brains i think they would of left you alone. we really have to do something about that luck of yours though, it’s going to ruin your face.” fallon laughed a little bit. “that’s good, i don’t think i’d be able to carry you to the store to get some ice.” she told him, leading the way.

“My bad luck usually doesn’t result in a knuckle sandwich, so I think my face will be fine. A little asymmetry never hurt anyone, right?” River joked. Following Fallon’s lead, River laughed. “Yeaaaah, you seem a little on the small side to be packing my ass around. I mean I am sure that you are way, way stronger than you look, but still.”

                         “ gotta admit, these thieves have some balls jumping someone when the city’s literally littered with police everywhere. they’ll be caught sooner or later. i already knew new york was scary but it’s just getting WORSE as the days go by. i’m starting to really consider self-defence classes. ” 

“Either ballsy or really stupid. I am kind of leaning towards stupid these days, but you never know. Though I really think that with the whole murder and multiple missing persons thing going on, the cops probably have more important things to do than chase down a couple of low level thugs. That being said, with everything that is going on, self-defense classes really aren’t a bad idea. I know a guy who teaches hapkido, if you are interested.”

Alice merely arched a brow at his story. “You got robbed by a pretty face?” She asked, chuckling lowly and shaking her head. This is why she didn’t reach out to help people, there was always something dark lurking beneath the surface of it all. “This is why you don’t help people because you end up getting humiliated and losing your lunch money.”

“Eh,” River shrugged, “I think my face hurts more than my pride right now and it isn’t like I really lost any money, so it could be worse. I’d still rather help someone out if they need it, since usually when people ask for help they actually need it.” Giving Alice a look, River added, “I take it you’re more of a glass half empty and the world is out to get everyone kind of person?”

     “someone robbed you? god, are you okay? do you need help?” leila asked as she stepped closer to river, lisp parting when she saw the bruises on his face. “this is awful…i…come with me, i have some sanitizer in my bag and a few medical plasters…i’m so sorry, river.”

“I’m fine at this point. It looks a lot worse than it is, promise,” River assured the girl. “And you don’t need to apologize. You weren’t the one who did it, so no apologizing. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

                  “ you’re too sweet for this world, river. they still beat you up even after finding out you only had a nickle? or did they beat you up before that? god, people suck. hopefully you remember what they look like ‘cause they should be reported to the police. especially when someone’s MISSING on campus. ” 

“They didn’t clue into the fact that I was broke until after they beat me up. They kind of swung first, asked questions later. I already called the cops about it and I think they feel like they have bigger fish to fry that someone being shook down for a few cents right now. Which is fine... I guess... so long as they don’t try it again.”

rydel sat down and sighed. “tha is terrible. i still can’t belive how terrible people can be.” Rydel frowned and tilted her head to look at the bruise. “You have iced it right? That really helps with any swelling. They tried to steal from you?” 

“People are the worst, I agree. I thought the days of being shook down for my lunch money was over once I hit my growth spurt, but I guess not.” Pulling a half-warmed ice pack from his pocket, he nodded. “Yeah, I got some ice for it. It helps a lot, so thank you. And, yeah. I think they thought I was one of the Dupont hotshots or something. The kind with deep wallets, you know?”

“naturally really big plus steroids i’m guessing.” jesse laughed, shaking his head. “the gym is a good idea though, so you’re well prepared for next time.” he nodded his head. ”yeah you have a good point, sometimes the cash is a better way to go. why don’t you just invest in a real bookmark so you don’t lose your money?” 

“The gym it is, then. Hopefully I don’t break anything this time. The machinery, I mean.” Nodding his head, he shrugged when Jesse asked why he didn’t just get a real bookmark. “I have probably a dozen somewhere, but I always lose them so I end up using what I have lying around.”

fallon couldn’t help but laugh a little, he sure had a way of explaining that he wasn’t very lucky, she couldn’t help but find him amusing. “yeah, i don’t wear too many brand items..i just like things that look nice or are comfy. sometimes you get lucky and there’s both, like with vans sneakers.” she nodded her head. “you’re right though, not the smartest group of people..they probably would of went after anyone.” she shrugged her shoulders a bit. “you’re welcome, we can probably get some in the cafeteria. come on, i’ll help you.”

“Good thing that brawn and smarts didn’t stack up with these two. I would have been in real trouble. Or no trouble at all, since anyone with two brain cells to run together can tell I am not make of money. But, then again, Kim Luck. It is a thing.” Rubbing his jaw, River could already feel the swelling a little bit. “Sounds like a plan, but don’t worry. They didn’t hit me hard enough to disorient me, I promise.”

“ River, what the hell? ” Kenzie furrowed her brows, eyes examining the bruises and marks left on his face. “ You need to be more careful, I swear! Do you know if the girls a student here? I’ll have a talk with her. ”

“I am careful. Most of the time anyway,” River assured Kenzie. “And I don’t recognize her and I definitely didn’t recognize the guy. It is kind of hard to miss someone that big.” Then, he paused, adding, “Why do I feel like the emphasis on the word ‘talk’ is kind of ominous?”

“who even makes guys that big? he sounds like a damn monster. shit, we better start hitting the gym again.” jesse told him. “yeah, i get that. i’m always losing things like that, it’s the reason why i mostly just have everything transferred right into my bank account. how do you lose money in a book?” 

“I am guessing a lot of food and maybe some steroids. Or maybe he was just... naturally really big... I don’t know. I didn’t really stop to ask and get his whole life story. We definitely have him in brains, though, but I am still down for hitting the gym. I probably shouldn’t get out of the habit.” Stretching his sore muscles, River winced a little. “I prefer bank transfers as well, but I’ve been burned by people not paying me before so if they offer cash, I will take the cash. And you lose money in books by using them as bookmarks. I also use receipts a lot.”
