“Papa, I have learned life isn’t always pickles and peaches.” -Idris

“But peaches can be grown and pickles can be made. All you need is a little patience.” Jiraiya replied before adjusting in his seat to reset himself. “Now. What’s the problem?”

“Ah that’s really smart papa.” Idris nodded solemnly. “There’s someone I want to be friends with but nothing I do seems to help.”

The boys were entranced as Jiraiya spoke. Riyu was glad to have a bit of peace and quiet as she cooked. It gave her time to finish dinner and set the table. She would peak in to see the boys hanging on every word Jiraiya spoke as he told the tale. It was adorable.

While she wasn’t surprised to see her husband still wasn’t home by the time dinner was finished, she was disappointed. She made a plate for him and set it aside.

The moment they finished dinner, the boys were asking for another story.

“Let Jiraiya finish his own food first, plus you two need to put your dishes away first.” Riyu pointed out, which had both boys jumping from their chairs to start cleaning their places at the table. “Sorry about them, they can be rather excitable.” She chuckled.

Jiraiya continued to wave off her worries. He adored how enthusiastic the boys were. Curiosity is a wonderful thing. Not many adults keep that thirst for new discoveries anymore.

“Don’t fret about it. It’s a break from the boring lectures and stuff I normally do. It’s far more fun.” He said with a smile.

Once he finished his plate he picked it up and brought it to her at the sink. It's the least he can do as a guest. “You’re a great cook. If I lived with you I’d be very well fed.” He compliments her. Odd her man didn’t show up. If he had someone who made him dinner everyday he’d come home inappropriately early.

“I’m glad they’re not too much. I know some people get overwhelmed with young kids.” She smiled softly as she watched her sons clean their plates. “Hell, I can get overwhelmed some times, but they’re generally well behaved. I’m very lucky.”

“Oh, thank you, I’ve worked very hard to get better. We ate a lot of raw food where I grew up so.” She shrugged unsure how to explain it. “It took awhile to get used to seasoning and cooking.” She smiled as the boys approached.

“Can we get some hot cocoa and another story?” Adam asked, grabbing Riyu’s hand.

“I’m Adam!” Adam approached offering his hand to Jiraiya to shake. “Well Adam Junior but I prefer just Adam.” He added.

“This here is Idris.” Riyu said, pushing Idris ahead of her. “Go on, honey, say hi to Jiraiya.”

“Hi.” Idris said softly, peaking up at Jiraiya. “Mama said you tell stories? Can we hear a story?”

“Yes! Please! Come on, we can sit at the table and wait for dinner!” Adam grabbed Jiraiya’s hand and began to pull Jiraiya to the kitchen.

Riyu chuckled as she watched. “I’m sorry, they can be a bit excitable.” She said covering her grin.

“It’s nice to meet you.” He replies with a smile. He ushers them towards the couch to keep them out the way. He sat on the floor in front of the couch, placing his elbows on the soft material as he leaned back. “Come on, stories are best told on the floor. Its like a campfire but without the bugs.”

Of course he had to pick a story now. One that isn’t too graphic. Then again when he was their ages he didn’t mind those kinds of things. But he was a guest. It’d be rude to teach them something he shouldn’t or accidentally traumatize them.

“Well… how about the real story of mermaids and the tale of Ariel. It’s far different than how you may know it….”

And so he started a somewhat sad story.

The moment they heard the door, Adam and Idris rushed in. They stood a moment in front of the stranger before Idris moved to hide before Riyu.

“Wow! You’re really tall! And you’ve got a lot of hair! And it’s white! Does that mean you’re old?” Adam asked, staring wide eyed at Jiraiya.

“Adam, where are your manners?” Riyu gasped. “I’m so sorry. I promise they’re generally more well behaved.”

“Hey! I didn’t says nothing!” Idris pointed out.

“Your husband is foolish. It smells delicious.” He compliments. He’s eaten everywhere and damn near anything. So perhaps his scope is a little odd.

He smiled at the boys. Kids… he’s been told he’s good with them. They say some unhinged things but that’s what’s great about them. An unfiltered almost brutal honesty. Its amusing more than insulting. He waved off the brashness with an unbothered wave.

“No no… I was born like this.” He didn’t mind answering. It’s one he gets a lot since he does look rather different.

He took boys in, looking at each of them with an even open look. Not staring… cuz that’s creepy. More an observation. They don’t have much in common with their mother. He sees plenty of that husband of hers in them.

“I’m Jiraiya. It’s nice to meet the two of you.” He introduced himself.

As the boys get older it’s more difficult to think of what to get them. Jiraiya tries. He updated the technology of the house, getting a tv and one of those… console things with games for the boys. He read the manuals, set things up, and slapped some bows on them all late in the night for them to wake up to.

For Riyu he knew he couldn’t go wrong with restocking some of her personal care items. Her big gift was a designer purse. Sure they aren’t very materialistic but one thing he knows is a lady needs something that’ll hold all her trinkets and last. Especially if it comes in black leather.

“You need something nice, and you don’t let me get you stuff.” He teased her a little, smiling wide at her. All in moderation… right?

When the boys woke they immediately went to their wrapped presents as well as the gaming console Jiraiya had gotten them. Riyu smiled as she watched how joyful they were. She always enjoyed seeing them happy.

"Oh, Jir, you didn't need to me something like this." She looked over the purse. "This is lovely, thank you." She leaned up and kissed Jiraiya. "Now for your gifts darling." She said.

"Yeah dad! We all made you something!" Idris grabbed a present from under the tree. "Here! Open!" He said offering the box to Jiraiya. The boys had made Jiraiya mugs.

"Here pops, made something I think you're going to like." Adam handed Jiraiya a calendar. A bathing suit calendar. "You're going to enjoy November's picture." He added. He may have convinced not only their mother to get pictures for this but also Tsunade. "It's waterproof too."

"And I made you something." Riyu said, pulling another box for Jiraiya. "You are an Uzumaki now, you should be wearing our clan's symbol." She said. While she had never been to Uzushio, she still had some of her father's old clothing. Thankfully she was handy with a needle and thread to make Jiraiya some Uzumaki traditional robes.

Riyu returned home to start on dinner, Adam was not home yet but he always expected food on the table when he arrived back from a long trip on the sea fishing. It had taken her a long time to get used to not only cooking food but cooking well. Selkie did not cook their fish before eating but she found humans could not eat most raw food.

Her sons returned from their little school her husband said they had to go to. She explained they would have a visitor that night, a traveling story teller. Adam and Idris are both very excited to meet this traveler, neither had ever left this little town much less met someone not from it.

She was still cooking when the knock came. Wiping her hands clean she answered the door. Smiling as she saw it was the stranger. "Come, come in." She said holding the door open for Jiraiya. "I have dinner cooking, my boys would love to hear stories while you wait. My husband hasn't arrived home yet."

Well.. there’s plenty to take in. Jiraiya smiled warmly in greeting. He offered out a small host gift. “Uh… the shops around here didn’t have much.”

It was a box of chocolates shaped and decorated like a can of sardines. It was the cutest of all the options. The flowers around here even looked a little depressed. Plus kids love chocolate… right?

He took his shoes off before walking inside. He noticed a few things at the door but there was more to take in. Warm. Homely. A little messy as expected from a young family. The few photos he saw has a… weird energy. The wedding photo was unusual. But maybe it’s a local thing… to look slightly… stiff?

“Thanks again. It’s been forever since I’ve had a home cooked meal. I’m excited to try it!” He compliments as he followed her to wherever it is she wished him to be until dinner.

“Oh chocolates! That was so kind of you.” Riyu closed the door behind him. “I hope you enjoy, my husband says I’m not much of a cook but I do my best. The food is different than from where I’m from.” She explained.

"Open my present first!!" Hayate whinned, shoving the box at Jiraiya.

"Hey, calm down guys, one at a time." Adam chuckled. "Happy birthday dad, mom is finishing up lunch if you want to do presents now or after lunch?"

"WE'RE HAVING CHIKEN RAMEN FOR DINNER!" Idris cried out, jumping onto the couch.

“Heh, aren’t I spoiled.” He says with a chuckle, taking each gift and hoisting each son into his lap. He looked up at Adam. “Well since the babies so excited we’ll just wait for mama to finish in the kitchen so she can help me open my presents, hm?”

He grins as he sat happily with his very loud gaggle of boys. Not that he minded. The chaos was nice. The excitement in the air all simply because he completed another year of life. He entertained the young ones long enough until Riyu could step out to be apart of the fun.

"My my, the boys are being awfully loud." Riyu chuckled as she wiped her hands clean. "Lunch is almost done, we've got pork curry for lunch and some dark chocolate for dessert." She said, moving into the living room. "Happy birthday, baby." She said leaning in to kiss Jiraiya.

"Can we do presents now and then food?" Hayate asked.

"You do know dad is opening the presents and not you?" Idris pointed out as he climbed onto the back of the couch.

"No! God no no I just meant you know, dancing crab kind of sounds like a sexually transmitted disease or something." She fumbled through her words.

"Oh yes, yes I am very lucky to have him and our boys." She nodded. "You've certainly seen more than any of us, though my husband does board a fishing boat every few months. So he's never seen much of the world either." She added, her voice fading as he kissed her hand.

Riyu can't move as she watches him leave. Why had he kissed her hand? She didn't understand what was going on. Adam had never kissed her hand before, not even while they were courting. He had said it was silly and outdated. But it seemed so romantic and sweet.

It took a bit of asking around but he found her house rather easily. He has a way with people. And well… he was invited. It’s not like he’s barging in.

To be polite he did bring something. Pastries that pair well with tea and coffee. If he’s going to give the impression of a decent stranger while he’s here he’s going to do it. The town gossip can make or break a man. If he wants stories and cooperation then he’s gotta show off a little. He knocked politely and waited.

Hopefully this fisherman husband of hers is gone on shift. He didn’t plan on seducing her or anything. However he had a feeling she’d be more free to talk without this other person. Even if he missed out on the talks for the town history, he’d have more fun talking to her.

It was just a hunch. Maybe he’s wrong. But something about it made him cringe.

“I know it sounds … uh lewd but the Dancing Crab doesn’t ask much questions and the inn keeper Hitoko doesn’t ask a lot of questions. His rooms aren’t large but they’re warm and dry. A lot of the other inns leak but you didn’t hear that from me.” She added softer. “Plus he makes a very good stew.”

“My husband will be back tonight, you could join us for dinner. I’m sure you’re well traveled, being a journalist- my boys would love to hear your stories.” She said, trying not to play with her hair.

“You make it sound like I plan to kill a man and snort several illegal substances off a hooker’s thigh.” Jiraiya jokes as he crosses his arms across his chest. He wasn’t one to do nefarious deeds… on the first day. But an innkeeper that minds his business isn’t a bad thing. Most small town people are nosy.

“Husband?” He asks. “And children? My aren’t you lucky to have all of that.” He says with a smile. “I’m happy to tell them stories. I’m not sure if my life has been particularly interesting but I do enjoy telling a good tale.”

He flicks his thoughtful gaze back to her. He reaches out to take her hand and kiss it. “Until tonight.” He utters before breaking away back to town.

Curiosity killed the catfish.

Viktor might have thought better of exploring unfamiliar waters, if he hadn’t always been sticking his nose where it didn’t belong since the day he was old enough to swim out from behind his mother’s fins. And here he was, suffering the consequences of his own actions. He’d gotten too close to one of the human fishing vessels when a wave hit it — sending boxes of cargo overboard, but also his current predicament: a large fishing net.

As entangled as he was, swimming was out of the question. He had struggled for so long that he had all but exhausted himself. So he settled at the bottom of the water, tucked into a reef for safety, hoping nothing would notice him until he again regained the ability to focus on getting out of the net tangled around him.

Netting tangled with the merman’s elegant opal fins, wrapped tightly around his powerful tail, kept his arms near his side with only a few inches of give. It was disorienting, and it was all he could do to tuck himself back and out of plain view.

He just needed a bit more rest was all. Just…. just five more minutes…

“I’d rather eat you,” Viktor replied—nibbling again at Kara’s collarbone. “…..We should eat before it gets cold, though, mm?”

“And save our energy, I have a feeling we’re going to be working rather hard.” Yuuri chuckled.

“Yuuri, will you bring the food dad prepared for us?” He asked, his hands moving along Viktor’s back. “I’ve got my hands full right now.”

“Oh I suppose.” Yuuri chuckled kissing them both. He got up and brought of the bags of food their dad had packaged for them.

Viktor leaned into the touches, practically melting under Kara’s hands. He closed his eyes, and pressed kisses along Kara’s neck. “….You’re going to make me want to eat dessert before dinner if you keep touching me, Kara.”

“I’ll be good, I don’t want to ruin your appetite.” Kara chuckled, pulling away to kiss Viktor.

Yuuri returned, setting the bag down and pulling out three bowls. “Dad made sure to pack dishes and utensils too.” He said loading up each plate. “Do you want to try chopsticks again or go with a fork, Viktor?” He asked offering the first bowl to kara.

“Thank you.” Kara said, sitting comfortably.

“What’s a dork?” Viktor asked, confused and definitely mispronouncing it. His mouth watered at the smell of the food, however — and he finally released Kara, and instead went to accept his own bowl from Yuuri.

“Fork, it’s an eating utensil.” Yuuri explained filling the next bowl and offered it to Viktor along with a fork. “It helps lift the food.” He added.

“It can be easier to use than chopsticks.” Kara pointed out. “Here you hold it like this.” Setting his bowl down, kara helped Viktor hold the fork correctly. “And you just scoop the food on the fork.”

Viktor tried it out — and definitely had an easier time than when they were trying to use chopsticks the first time.

He managed to eat while keeping the food from falling all over himself—which was a win, when the “rice” was so tiny!

Kara chuckled as he watched Viktor, “delicious isn’t it?” He asked as he began to eat.

Yuuri finally sat down with his own bowl. “So good.” He hummed between bites. “You like it?”

“You two always feed me delicious food,” he agreed. “I loved this the first time you shared it, too~ your favorite, right?” He smiled towards both his mates, his tail waving absently. He was beginning to dry up a bit, which was making him itchy…. But, ah, well. It made it easier to lay with his mates. So he would allow it.

“It is our favorite. Just the sauce is so good with the veggies!” Kara hummed between the bites.

“And you can’t forget the pork and egg, so creamy!” Yuuri sighed. “So good, here we’ve got some bottled water to drink.” He handed out the bottles to kara and Viktor. “Dad offered soda but I wasn’t sure if you’d like it. It’s really sweet.”

“Soda?” Viktor looked confused, but accepted the water and took a sip—only to make a face very briefly, before he could control himself.

As a creature who had spent his entire life in saltwater…. Fresh water was just wrong. He politely set it down, and continued eating the katsudon. That, at least, was safe.

“Sweet… another mer I talked to once said he liked sweet things. I wasn’t sure what he meant. He talked a lot about fruits — they fell into the waters where he lived rather often.”
