Watcher Rant (part 2)
Sorry Iām back after overthinking this more! Iām seeing a lot of people say ārare Watch Lā but letās be honest, their business plan has been really weird and maybe shitty already. As someone who wants to go into tv/film, their practices have been really irregular. They never even went through any sort of green-lighting plan for their smaller shows. Things like mystery files and ghost files were a guaranteed success, but for their other shows, like puppet history, top 5 beat down, worth a shot, survival mode, weird wonderful world, etc are a HUGE risk. They had an opportunity, when the channel was new, to test a whole bunch of new things and see what sticks, (releasing one/two shot videos) and they didnāt. They sort of ran blindly into it.Ā
The fact theyāre spending so much they can only afford to produce one show a week was also strange. They didnāt try to build their channel naturally at all. They came from Buzzfeed and I hate to say it, but I think they were too used to having all of their content be a guaranteed success because they were attached to a big brand. Being successful at creative endeavors means taking risks, and you NEED to make sure you can afford to take those risks (or at least learn to try alternate routes when the shows start flopping).Ā
I love all of their content. I watch all of mystery files, puppet history, and top 5 beat down, but certain people need to stop pretending we owe them money because our viewership, our patron subscriptions, and the money we spend on merch canāt pay for all of their awfully-planned budget.Ā
Again, I sincerely hope they work all of this out, because I love Ryan and Shane, but they seriously need to recalculate and reconsider a lot of their plans.Ā
