Workday Blues | Open

Severus sat up straight in his seat when he heard the bell chime on the door, ready to get up and have Lily relieve him, but his shoulders slumped forward again in dismay when he realized it was only Remus. Only Remus, he thought with a little scoff; only my most potentially dangerous customer.
Out of all of his customers, though, Remus didn’t bother him too much day-to-day. He was a nice fellow, seemed to be pretty smart, but the circumstance of his business was what really made Severus’ skin crawl. He never understood the public’s fascination with werewolves, and he himself found them to be frightening more than anything else. As the full moon grew closer, he always worried that for some reason the tea wouldn’t work, and the first thing he always did on the morning after a full moon was check the papers for anything regarding an ‘animal attack’. Perhaps he was just paranoid, but Severus wasn’t taking any chances.
“Good morning, Remus,” he replied once the man had walked over to the counter. Severus nodded at his request. “Of course. We always have more of your blend ready to go,” he said, giving him a tiny smile before he ducked down to rifle through the drawers beside him. Generally, he kept a box of Remus’ tea right at the font of the store in case if he stopped by, but today it wasn’t in its usual spot. His brows furrowed and he glanced back up at the man for a second before hopping off of his stool and quickly opening all of the other drawers and cabinets that were behind him. “Er, maybe it’s… Did you come in for some last week? I…” he muttered half to himself, still not finding anything.
Eventually, Severus gave up and turned to Remus with an expression that was equally apologetic and worried. “I’m… Sorry,” he started, scratching the back of his head. “I always make extra of yours, but we’ve been getting more customers than usual and I must’ve forgotten to make more amidst everything else.” Severus took his seat again and quickly scribbled down a note for himself, chewing his bottom lip. “I can make some right now if you have time to wait, though Lily is out so I’ll need her to come back first to run the counter… Or I can bring you some tonight, once I’ve had time to make it. We certainly don’t want you running out of tea.”
"Ah, sorry." Remus pressed a hand to his forehead and shook his head in contrition. "You prefer Severus. Forgive me; it's so automatic." He tried to return the smile, but the other man had already ducked his head to search through the drawers. He tapped his fingers on the counter as he waited, drumming a made-up rhythm. He was trying to think of what else he could do while he was out and about, if only to avoid going back to studying for a little while. There was a sociology paper that needed writing, and a chapter on the wixen and non-wixen relations in the colonies which, he had to admit, he was pretty excited to read.
He was pulled from his thoughts by Severus' furrowed brow and muttering. "Er... I don't believe so," Remus answered, which was a polite way of saying no. If he'd come in last week, there would have been no need to come in this week. Still, he waited while Severus searched the cupboards and drawers, his eyebrows rising when the search came up empty. Not out of anger of worry, just out of surprise. He was so used to being able to walk in and buy the tea on any given day that he hadn't even considered that he might have to leave without it.
"Oh. That's alright," Remus said, trying to reassure the man, who looked quite perturbed about the situation. They really did take customer service here very seriously. "It was rude of me not to call ahead. I shouldn't have assumed." And he had assumed. He was going to make sure to call ahead next time, just in case.
Remus paused at the suggestion of Severus delivering to his apartment. It was nothing to do with Severus of course; Remus trusted the man to make his Wolfsbane Tea after all. It was more to do with a general reluctance that he had about inviting people to his home, or having them know where he lived. When he was out in the world, he did what he had to do, smiled and entertained and let them poke around in his personal life. His apartment was a safe haven, a place cut off from the gossips and the people who saw him as a tame werewolf. Severus wasn't one of the gossips, Remus was sure of that, but he just wanted to keep certain aspects of his life separate. And if Severus delivered the tea to his apartment, Remus would have to invite him in for a cup of something.
Besides, he had been looking for something to occupy his time; an excuse not to return to studying just yet. "I could wait a little," Remus said, as if the decision had been made in a split second. He wandered over to to the side of the store to look around, before casually asking: "How did you fare in the great Salamander Incident?"
