☆ // mga episode 2: go hard or go home!

heyo! it’s ya girl ssen coming back at ya with a review of the third season of the mgas!

to start this off, let’s talk about how excited am about this new format! i guess mnet listened to the criticisms of the past couple of seasons, mainly the ones where the CEO’s pretty much disregarded the winner’s dream companies and just picked all willy nilly. i mean, yeah they got a right to do that and all, but what’s the point of putting their top dream companies on the app if you’re just gonna screw ‘em over like that in the end? at least with this new format, you know what you’re getting into before hand, or somethin’. we’ll see how this pans out.

another thing i wanna say: is that the current group of idol hopefuls have their work cut out for them, because season 2 was the shit. you had a lot of talent in that season, a lot of creativity, and this new group is gonna have to go hard or go home if they want to create an even better season than before. mnet has done their part with the new format, now it’s up to these kids to fuckin’ bring it. pumped? i know i am.

and lastly, the coaches! i don’t know what to think about having trainees as coaches instead of someone with more experience -- but at the same time, they might be more relatable to the contestants because they were in their shoes before they became trainees, maybe? who knows. we’ll talk more about that in the episode 3 blog post.

without further ado, onto the review of the panel round. let’s get it!

#3001 ― IM JAEBUM ; ROYAL + SPHERE HOPEFUL

well, i said i was looking for entertaining, and i got it here! poor boy seemed nervous and it was kind of ... odd going back and forth from singing and talking -- but hey, he has a nice voice and it was endearing, in a way, so i’m here for it! i’ll remember him as the melody switcher, since he probably sang about 5 different songs in the span of one minute.

#3002 ― KWAK HEEO ; ROYAL + SPHERE + KT + TRC HOPEFUL

a lil spitfire, this one is. the martial arts was a nice touch, and her rapping was pretty good, but at the same time it came off kinda ... try hard? like i feel like she’s trying to hard to imitate rappers and things you see on tv instead of trying to show who she really is.

#3003 ― CHENG XIAO ; NOVA + KT HOPEFUL

well damn. that was kind of .... scary. HAHAH. i mean that in a good way, though. she seemed like she really connected with the words and was passionate about it and the way she got more and more aggressive with each verse ... i thought she was gonna be screaming at the panel by the end of it. she’s a spitfire too, and it’s not something you’d think she’d be by looking at her. i like that, and i’m interested to see what she’ll bring to the table.

#3004 ― KIM JONGHYUN ; TRC HOPEFUL

i’m just gonna say it -- he hot as hell. very good looking. and on top of that, that range. his voice is very unique sounding, it’s not the typical kpop main vocal that you’d hear, and he’s smart for showing off his range at this time. not only does it showcase his talent, but it’s something that sticks in your mind as well. i’d be nervous if i were everyone else, honestly -- he ain’t playin’ no games!

#3005 ― LEE SEUNGHWAN ; ROYAL + NOVA HOPEFUL

so, i might be biased here because i’m the type of person that goes to sleep or walks out the room when slow songs or ballads come on during music shows, but the song kinda put me to sleep. a bit. i feel like he should have picked something that would have been more memorable. but the piano sounded really pretty with his voice though, so that’s a good thing! and he’s also hot as hell, too. watching him play that thing was what kept me awake. mmh.

#3006 ― KIM SEOLHYUN ; NOVA + SPHERE HOPEFUL

hello! this is what i’m talking about in terms of creativity. who would of thought to tell a story through finger tutting? i felt like a little kid by how engaged i was, watching her move her fingers like that in tune with her words. tutting isn’t as easy as it seems so it showcases her skill very well, and was a very smart move on her part. you go girl! i’m definitely keeping an eye on you.

#3007 ― BYUN BAEKHYUN ; KT + ROYAL HOPEFUL

awwwww, what a cuuuuuuuuutie! reminds me of those class clown type of dudes in school, or just a guy being a dude with his friends in a norebang. you have to have a certain feel and charisma to touch people with trot music, and i think he’s got it. he also has a very pretty voice to listen to as well! overall, super adorable.

#3008 ― LU HAN ; NOVA HOPEFUL

speaking of super adorable, look at that face! that’s the type of shit noona’s swoon over! but i digress -- it was impressive what he did with the sword. though he did seem a little awkward with it at first, and it was awkward with him just kind of flinging the sword in the quiet -- i think it would have been much more interesting if he had done it to a song, or a beat, or something. anyways, totally got mulan vibes from this. wassup, li shang!

#3009 ― KWON YURI ; NOVA + KT HOPEFUL

i don’t know... i was left feeling underwhelmed from this performance. don’t get me wrong, it was good, but not exactly entertaining or memorable. i feel like she could have, and should have went harder than that -- now’s not the time to be humble or shy about your skills, yuri-sshi! show us what you got, girl! she possibly has the best english out of all the contestants on the show, though -- which will get her some points with the international crowd.

#3010 ― KIM JONGIN ; KT + NOVA HOPEFUL

what the fuck! WHAT THE FUCK! all those bendy moves and shit! when he started i remember thinking it was interesting because a lot of female idols do those types of flexibility moves and you hardly, if ever, see a male do the same. so i was like oh, okay, but then he started breaking his back and i was like YOOOOOOOOOOO. does he even have a spine? like, that’s not a performance i’ll forget even if i tried -- very nice!

#3011 ― AHN HYOJIN ; NOVA + KT HOPEFUL

honestly speaking? i don’t know whether this girl is a genius or if she just didn’t think. her thing was conflicting -- on one hand, you’re lying if you say you didn’t laugh at least once through out her minute. especially when she fell. but at the same time, one can think that she didn’t prepare as much as the others did and it looked like she just threw something together last minute, which can turn a looot of viewers off. it especially jarring since she’s a rapper, and she decided to dance ( if that’s what you call it ) this round. it’ll be very interesting to see which team she gets on and why!

#3012 ― KANG HEEGUN ; TRC + ROYAL HOPEFUL

the oldest competitor this season at 25, yet he showed he can hold his own with the young blood. it’s great that he performed one of his own songs, especially one that was dedicated to someone. it was serious and very emotional; his rap style is unique and off beat, but it didn’t take away from his performance. not even gonna lie here guys, i might have shed a tear or two watching him. if this is what he has at the beginning rounds, i’m excited to see what he has in store for the next rounds!

#3013 ― KIM JINWOOK ; ROYAL + NOVA HOPEFUL

another cutie alert! he has nice piano skills, and before i knew it i found myself bobbing my head to the beat as he was singing. it was a really bright-sounding performance, and the way he threw his head to the camera suddenly was both funny and adorable. not gonna lie, i hope he and baekhyun are both on team royal. cutie pie squared!

#3014 ― LEE YEJI ; TRC + NOVA HOPEFUL

unfortunately for us ( and for her ), she was absent. that sucks, and it’s only gonna effect her negatively with the next round. :(

#3015 ― KANG SEULGI ; ANY COMPANY HOPEFUL

the cuties keep coming, another one in the form of kang seulgi! i looooove the cutie pies, i swear to god. it was really sweet and endearing how she did the pokemon theme song, along with the pikachu impressions. it was quirky cute! though i will say, i feel like pikachu impressions are super overdone at this point because it’s very easy to do. if you really wanna impress people, try a different main pokemon!

#3016 ― JUNG SOOJUNG ; ROYAL + SPHERE + NOVA + TRC HOPEFUL

from the get go, you can tell that this girl is a very technical singer. probably one of those who have been singing since birth, and it shows. however, it was a little odd that she was smiling at times during such a heartbreaking song -- it kind of threw me off a little bit. regardless, she showed her maturity through out, and it was a good performance ... but something felt ... missing? i don’t know what it is, either.

#3017 ― KIM JIYEON ; NOVA + SPHERE HOPEFUL

we took a break from the cuties and then they came back with a vengeance -- i feel like i need to go the damn doctor because i got 28 cavities from this girl! she knows how to work what she’s got; from her voice, to her face, to her outfit and the song, it was all very cute and adorable. from her tone it sounds somewhat sturdy, like she’s capable of more, so i hope we get to hear her full potential this season!

#3018 ― SON SEUNGWAN ; ANY COMPANY HOPEFUL

you gotta have balls to sing one of the ceo’s songs anytime through out the season, and even bigger ones to try and re-arrange the song to perform. she has guts and i think she rocked it. i could see her trying to build confidence within as she tried to dance around and such, but i think she really could have nailed it if that confidence was there already. like girl, you have a pretty voice, talent and looks! i know this ain’t shit coming from someone who hasn’t even bothered to try the mgas, but have more confidence in yourself! or fake it ‘til you make it ~

#3019 ― KIM NARI ; TRC + KT HOPEFUL

i don’t know if i’m being harder on the dancers because i thought last season’s dancers were super creative and fun to watch or what, but like yuri, i feel like it was kind of tame too. maybe i’m just hard to please since i love myname or something. when she turned her back and was just shaking her hips it was ??? confusing what she was trying to accomplish there... but she made that up with the twerking. she looked like she knew what she was doing there, butt or not! the split at the end was very clean too -- so come harder next round, nari-sshi!

#3020 ― JEON JIYOON ; NOVA + TRC HOPEFUL

this is what i would have liked to see from luhan’s performance -- martial arts with a modern beat makes it a lot more entertaining to watch, especially for people who aren’t familiar with the intricacies and hard work that comes with doing martial arts. she looked hella badass, especially seeing that green hair flow in the wind like that. also! smart idea to showcase your singing skills at the end there too. very fun to watch, you go girl!

#3021 ― LEE MIJOO ; ANY COMPANY HOPEFUL

first thing’s first, she’s really, really pretty. like, she has the looks of a kt girl. and nice legs! but on to the performance -- you have some pretty big shoes to fill if you attempt to sing a gummy song. pretty sure she knew this, because she did very well! you could really feel her emotions within her voice, and she portrays them nicely. don’t know if she is, but she strikes me as another mature soul like soojung.

#3022 ― PARK CHORONG ; SPHERE + TRC + NOVA + ROYAL HOPEFUL

tambourine girl! it was a good idea to bring that with her instead of just rapping to an instrumental like most did; it shows of an unusual skill while complementing one of her main skills. that causes her to stand out, in a good way. it’s was another smart move to sing too, her voice is very pleasant to the ears! potential all rounder, maybe? we just have to see her dance to find out.
