benry was never a terrible evil threat or an eldritch beast or really scary or that harmful . however i mean this in a way that is so on a different wavelength than most of the earlier fandom that i think it would strike everyone from 2021-2023 dead (including my past self) .

he was never in the actual position of power, gordon is because he's the player. gordon could turn him off if he wanted to.

He did not actually hurt gordon at all (besides maybe mentally) . no hands were laid on actual gordon and no actual hands were taken from him. i firmly believe the betrayal was meant to kill gordon to send him back to his last save and piss him off. benry is confused and upset when Gordon's arm is taken off because this is now a permanent consequence. also because he didn't tell them to do that which means something in the game changed by itself to make the soldiers take Gordon's arm.

the only people you could call benry a real threat to is the rest of the science team. thing is we clearly see that he likes them and he doesn't really mess with them until the end. ex. he randomly starts playing soccer with bubby (i believe it was him) and on top of that we know they did the betrayal together. he likes to sit with/on coomer and multiple times we see them play into each other's shenanigans. benry doesn't seem to get upset when coomer knocks him around. in Holly's chronicles he accidentally calls coomer (as if he knows his number). we know he's friends with Tommy. he's annoying to darnold but they dont seem to be on bad terms. even at the boss battle he's just aimlessly shooting around like a fool. the scene with tommy during it is worth mentioning and i think his "let him go (it'll be over faster)" was still a showing of mercy. he has to kill them all if he wants to win. him saying to quit trying to stop the skeletons attacking tommy and just let him go is a type of mercy we never see him extend to Gordon and that's because he's fully aware of the fact that gordon isn't in any danger but the rest of the team is. <- at least that's what im getting there

he's literally just not an eldritch beast (in terms of "big scary alien") because he never was. he's an ai with a disturbing amount of control over his game that he's able to use to mess with his appearance. i dont think he ever says himself that he's an alien or that he's supposed to be from xen. he only ever came off like he was an alien or some big scary eldritch space god because he needed to be framed like one for the immersion. it is also because a lot of the fandom went "cool alien" and ran with it. i do not blame them and i still make him look like an alien because it is fun.

benry has plenty of opportunities to cause more genuine harm in his world besides comical shit. he only really goes after non self aware npcs and Gordon. both of them aren't going to be genuinely harmed in any way that matters (minus Gordon's reaction). benry being as self aware as he is could have gone to coomer and told him everything. there's a good chance that would break his ai. however we see him actually leave coomer and gordon alone when they're talking at the end of hlvrai and he never says anything to coomer about the nature of the game at all. plus, he could try to kill other members of the team but he doesn't.

he's generally just not that malicious in general and all "evil" behavior from him comes with minimal consequences besides gordon losing his shit. it's really clear all the stuff he does to bother gordon is for attention. wayne (i believe it was him) compared his behavior to a little boy tugging on his crush's pigtails and i think that's exactly what kind of thing it is. he's irritating gordon because it gets his attention and he thinks the behavior is funny so Gordon will think it's funny too (and he often does!!!). also i wont go into it now but i think scorpy's chronicles of benry is showing that benry becomes aware that his behavior is screwing him over eventually.

in ai crushes all banks he "hacks" his way into the frequency and somehow gets into payday 2 without gordon adding him to the game. he does all that by himself. and then he uses that power just to play the game with them. scorpy may have not exactly been there during hlvrai but he knows what he's doing when he's making art. i have no reason to believe he wouldn't be aware of how having benry do all that just for him to play payday 2 with the team would come off.

i again could talk about video boyfriend/scorpy's chronicles of benry but i wont shut up if i do that so just. consider them. especially since they're actual content made by scorpy himself and are fully intentional characterization rather than improv.

i think a lot of the earlier fandom was mischaracterizing him terribly because they misunderstood the context around why he acted like he did. they WERE right, he is in a way just a misunderstood character who got pushed into becoming the bad guy. he really is just annoying gordon because he has a crush on him. he's just not the woobified mess he was turned into lol .

Whenever popular posts mischaracterize benrey, especially from people outside of the fandom (I think of the 'HLVRAI would be a good psychological horror because benrey is a manipulative mastermind' post) I have to ask... did we engage with the same material at all? I dont think throwing a frag in COD and team killing everyone then asking 'who did that?' constitutes as masterful manipulation, you know?

Benrey knows Gordon is the player character. He's an entity beyond anything he has ever experienced before. He literally has no frame of reference for how the player experiences his own reality beyond the game. All he wants is a moment of attention, just a few hours of gameplay, with the very reason why he exists. It's as if he is reaching out to a god.

I think the most important thing about HLVRAI is that gordon is exploiting the AI for profit and they should unionize.

reveal of my gordon hlvrai costume project, now that about half of it is done! this is cardstock and glue and tape and more glue and paint and velcro. and 2 gloves (one hand-sewn)

i got started sometime in early-mid fall, but i committed to making it work with cardstock in january- it was originally meant to be a sizing test before construction with eva foam over the summer. then i realized how expensive thatd be, too much pressure for a form of craft ive never practiced. im pretty amazed with how its come together, even with the large seams! during that whole time when it was unpainted (started painting two weeks ago) there was no way to tell
