Actually, life is beautiful and I have time
sharing music as a form of intimacy
new decade, new overblown viral epidemic fearmongering
Im seeing people panic the fuck out over this as well as news media try and raise fear for ratings and like, yeah Wuhan coronavirus is a serious medical risk that needs to be dealt with but for fucks sake this isn't the fucking return of the Spanish Flu and despite the news using scary words like DEADLY only 17 people have died from respiratory complications that are treatable out of 900 infected. Don't buy into this fear-peddling dog shit
The flu kills more people every year, but people ain’t lining up to get a flu shot. Something comes from China and suddenly “oMg DeAdLy”
Strong disagree. Being super paranoid about new diseases is why we generally don’t get massive pandemics anymore. We haven’t had enough time to actually evaluate the disease yet, we don’t know how dangerous it is, being very cautious is reasonable.
I do take constructive criticism, but only from people who have or are pursuing PhDs. Thank you have a good day.
The reason we don't have massive pandemics isn't because of goddamn paranoia and panicking as soon as something happens, it's because we now have a strong scientific understanding of how contagions work, detecting and screening them when outbreaks occur, and using technology to sequence, study and eventually vaccinate against dangerous pathogens. Spanish Flu got as bad as it did because people were popping Aspirin as if it was a cure-all and most of the world still had no clue how the virus spread and subscribed to Miasma theory.
We have had time to study 2019-nCoV to sequence it's genome, we've calculated the rate of infection, we've determined the mortality rate is 4% (keep in mind SARS had a mortality rate of 10%, MERS had one of 34%). We know how the virus spreads, we know that it takes 2 weeks before patients become symptomatic, and we know that deaths are caused by respiratory complications like pneumonia, which are treatable and preventable in sterile medical environment. We also know that it jumped to humans from snakes and bats, greatly helping research into it's origins and applying that to curb outbreaks. The goddamn seasonal flu is a larger threat than this.
Maybe it's not apparent to you, but paranoia and panic ISN'T fucking good during a health crisis, especially if the country where the virus originated from is the one currently in front of the barrel of the US' geopolitical propaganda game. The WHO is asking public officials to refer to the virus as nCoV rather than "Wuhan/China coronavirus" due to the stigmatism and bigotry that can come to Asian people, specifically Chinese people, especially in an age where white supremacists are using the rhetoric that immigrants and people of color cause pestilence, ESPECIALLY at a time where the Trump administration is engaged in a proxy war with China. Need I remind you of the paranoia against African people during the Ebola outbreak, or against Latinx people during Swine Flu?
So no, I strongly disagree. There is no need to panic, we have studied it significantly enough to determine everything from it's genome, to it's infectivity and mortality rate. Being a paranoid fucker over a SCARY FOREIGN DISEASE has historically shown to fucking do more harm than good. The last 4 major disease scares ultimately lead to no horrible pandemic, and the fear-mongering ended up fucking over people solely because they were minorities.
I don't need a goddamn doctorate's in epidemiology or microbiology to tell you how much of a dumb fuck you and your asinine, dog shit logic is. Go kick yourself in the ass.
An autistic friend of mine just said this to me “The harder I work at communication the more people expect from me and the less they are willing to compromise.” and it is the most fucking heartbreaking thing I’ve heard.
This is very much a thing, though - and I’m sure people across the board with other disabilities can verify that it happens to them, too. People will turn any progress you make toward being “normal” - no matter how straining or difficult it is for you, no matter how little it actually helps you - as either inspiration porn, or proof that you don’t really need accommodations, you just need to “apply yourself! :)))))”
god today i ID’d an old dude buyin booze and he pulled out a fake ID with an elvis pic, then laughed and pulled out a matching one but with curly from three stooges on it, and im like okay please and he finally pulled out his real license and his legal name was steve sinner
that was the devil
biggest joke this week was tories going round tescos n taking pictures w a can of beans n saying thanks to food banks for feeding the ever-increasing number of starving families. I.e. the thousands of families with absolutely no income or means to feed their kids. all year long peoples lives are directly impacted and ruined by tory- implemented austerity. and every year feeding the poor is sold to us as a feel good bit of festive fun. tories pulling these stunts after this particularly harrowing year is just….WILD though.
this ain’t even a gesture or posturing towards compassionate conservatism…. it’s a deliberate attempt to rub away the established responsibility that lies with the state. where food bank donation is goodwill and kindness and all that fuzzy warm liberal christian ish bollocks then that also means that by stripping poor people of their benefits then the tories aren’t morally fucked after all. feeding poor people and disabled people and unemployed people and children is a CHOICE and if you choose to do it you’re just really nice and immeasurably generous.
gross.
the supermarket that I work for with a middle-class and typically tory customer coming thru its doors has notices up advising customers to donate to our food bank collection and ‘light up someone else’s Christmas’…
ya ain’t lighting up no povver’s Christmas, you’re not a hero for that tin of chicken soup. eating meals and being able to provide meals for your family is not heart warming or a joy. kids ain’t jumping round buzzing over getting fed. food is a right that is regularly taken away from people in this disgustingly and unjustly wealthy country. it makes me sick how these people are so full of it and full of themselves. people who have never and will never worry about food or their own children going through any significant hardship, let alone real genuine painful hunger and malnutrition. the same people who think it’s such a considerate and generous warm lovely thing thing to do are the people who voted these scum in and who wanted poor people stripped of their humanity and dignity in the first place- who have shaped a society in which feeding and clothing and sheltering the poor and vulnerable is a middle-class christian novelty. the rest of us recognise it as an alarming and immediate necessity to provide for and maintain and protect our communities where they are being harmed. food banks are necessary because the government has made them so. not warm and fuzzy paragons of community goodness. speak to the people using them and to the people working to feed the poor. it’s not 'lighting up’ no one’s Christmas, at best it’s keeping people alive long enough to cling to hope for something better. soon, eventually, hopefully.
it’s just one of those croissant days
we love a recovery
