If they do the function of trees where trees cannot then what is that tree doing in the background of the picture.
Great question! Right off the top of my head I notice that that algae tank is directly UNDER a tree, where there is insufficient light and space for a second tree, so I would call that doing a function where a tree cannot. 2x greenery!
And because the microalgae can be installed quickly and immediately provide the pollutant-cleaning power of two 10-year-old trees, it can quickly and cheaply support nearby trees by reducing air pollution. The tanks are able to remain active even during seasonal temperature extremes when trees might be dormant. And the excess biomass of algae can also be removed monthly and used as fertilizer. :3
The biotechnology involved is also adaptable to helping with pollution in other areas such as rivers and lakes, so working with these on a smaller scale (like as simple benches within cities) can improve our understanding of how to apply them to larger scale problems.
landscape architect here! aka, the person who puts trees in places, for example urban areas! one of the problems with trying to plant trees along the streets of larger cities is that most infrastructure (power cables, water piping, gas, sewage systems) run underneath the road and sidewalks, usually a meter or so underneath the surface, and take up a large percentage of tree-planting-space. not only is it difficult to find a suitably large empty space, since both infrastructure and the tree need an extra protective area around them to avoid bumping into each other and also other harmful stress factors, but you also need to factor in that that tree will grow. the roots will expand. tree roots will crawl underneath the sidewalk and disrupt the paving and make the sidewalk a lot less usable! and tree roots usually extend farther out than the canopy goes, which, is a pretty big space
also, and i recon this must be an issue in other counties as well not just hungary, where i live, but diseases can limit the tree species you can use. a lot of trees also dont tolerate the lack of soil and the air pollution that urban spaces mean for them. climate change is also rapidly transforming the type of trees we can plant, because the changing climate means changing conditions and that a) can make a lot of already planted trees wither and die b) means you have to find new species to work with. which is always a tossup
putting a disclaimer here that since i live in hungary i do not know for sure if infrastructure is laid out in a similar way in every other country. i know its a very big limiter here when it comes to planting trees
anyways, i read upon these tanks a while back and yeah they are super cool! as many people already said, they arent meant to replace trees; they are going in the spots where more trees cant
