Every once in a while someone will discover Thomas Thorne and go absolutely insane over him in the BBC Ghosts tag lmao

Modern Ghosts AU where they're all forced together by community service, because there is no possible way I see all of them voluntarily interacting for longer than 10 minutes.

They're all there for different sentences, some deserved, some unfair, some framed.

Alison and Mike work as probation workers, and they're so tired of these people.

These two scenes describe the Captain’s character and personal issues so perfectly to me

"I did hit a seagull. I… still feel bad about it actually. And it’s the silence after the shot. One minute they’re cawing away happily and the next it’s just… feathers."

"Is that game? Does that count as game? Well anyway it’s a seagull and I shot it."

He wants to be the tough and rough soldier that’s expected and glorified in his time and background, that he looks up to himself, but he just isn’t. He’s too soft. He still feels bad for accidentally killing a bird ~80 years after the fact, when a real soldier (a real man) should be proud (in that mindset; these aren’t my opinions). Even if he wouldn’t have immediately died on the battlefield, I doubt he’d have been capable of killing anybody. He’s just not made for it. He has a weak heart that cares about a bird, cares too much about another man, cares too much about his superiors’ opinions (and which fails him eventually)

And these separate scenes put together put it so beautifully showing how he lets his real self out with a close friend vs how he acts to impress someone. With Kitty he can admit to and show his "weakness", he trusts her with it. But with a potential new friend, who’s a gamekeeper and is used to dealing with hunting, he reverts back to the tough persona. And the wording is interesting too: "hit" implies an accident, while "shot" implies intention
