You can turn them off, but yeah. Hated that!
One moment I'll link some posts with directions? That might at least help
All links go to Tumblr posts unless otherwise noted. Those posts may or may not link offsite.
EDIT 2026-04-01: ms-demeanor's website and Fuck Google install guide, with suggestions on what extensions to install.
Waterfox is a Firefox fork that has 0 AI. You can install it instead of Firefox. Link goes to a tumblr post with more info.
Firefox: this is how I edited Firefox to get rid of the AI functions within the browser itself - not search engine, i.e. google.
This link accomplished something similar, and also tells you how to outright get rid of Perplexity, Firefox's new AI-enabled search engine.
Duckduckgo No AI: This is a search engine that does not return AI results. Ymmv on Duckduckgo as a search engine, BUT the nice thing about Firefox is that you can set something other than Google as your default search engine, and then easily access other search engines from a dropdown in the URL bar, so you can still use Google as a backup. Check out the post for directions and pictures.
Search Engine List for search engines that aren't the like, big 5. There's some info about Qwant on here, specifically, if you're curious. Also some neat small project search engines.
Google (links offsite): Can't find the tumblr post right now, but also consider udm&14 as a replacement search engine for Google. It turns off that shitty AI overview and I think kills a lot of the AI nonsense in Google searches specifically.
You didn't ask, but in case it's useful:
Hope this helps! I gotta run to class, but feel free to ask me if anything doesn't make sense! I've done most of this on desktop AND mobile, so I can walk you through either if you're having trouble!
