hera telling lovelace that she "[doesn't] ever get more than forty-five minutes of sleep" and pryce threatening to give hera "a new recurring nightmare" kind of haunts me, because it's such a perfect microcosm of the way hera was given a human mind (and human desires) for the express purpose of being dehumanized. in s1, eiffel ignorantly assumes that hera doesn't sleep: "either that or she's finally figured out how to access her sleep mode" and people are constantly trying to reframe and dictate the language that describes her experiences: "'pain' is just the closest thing we have to it." don't think of it as dead, think of it as "decommissioned." pryce threatening hera with "a new recurring nightmare" is so awful because it's so honest. the cruelty is the point. hera's defense of lovelace's humanity emboldens her to reclaim some language for herself as well, but you have to wonder: when did eiffel realize he was wrong? can hera talk to him - or anyone - about her nightmares? does she even feel like she's allowed to define what she experiences as "nightmares"?
