[Text description: large green text in all caps that says: Hello and welcome to my (the word bog, crossed over) blog! /End Description]
be warned, my interests change a lot. only consistent thing i blog about is bugs. also i talk surprisingly little about rocks
I try to always reblog media posts with image descriptions or add them myself. When i can't do this i tag the post as #undescribed
explaining common tags below the cut đ
general tags i use:
#art (reblogging other people's art)
#brain rock (original posts) (it's a bad pun)
#svenska (posts in swedish)
#matouf moment (pics of my cat)
#long post (long posts)
#food (anything food related)
#crafts (crafting inspo or patterns)
#dreams (sharing what i dreamt about)
#tics (talking about my experience having tics, also for reblogs)
#tic description (post that shows or describes a specific tic, this is so people who pick up other's tics easily can block the posts)
#undescribed (media posts without image descriptions)
#functionally described (media posts that explain what's in an image, without having an actual image description)
i don't like using tw or cw for tagging animals (or other organisms) because i don't like the negative associations that gives the creature. here are all my creature tags:
#bugs (any creepy crawlies)
#spiders
#crustaceans (for crabs, shrimp, lobsters etc. not for isopods or insects)
#isopods
#centipedes
#snails <3 (snails)
#birba (birds)
#fish
#eevil weevil (weevils. i just like the rhyme)
#fungi
#cordyceps
#slime mold
feel free to block them to avoid stuff or search for them on my blog if you want to see my collection of creatures
and of course, if you want me to start tagging something else, feel free to ask đ
My spouse and I were talking last night and the jeans problem came up so I want to talk about it with tumblr here.
The jeans problem was the favorite lecture one of my philosophy professors in college gave about the history of jeans and how it ties into capitalism/mainstream culture absorbing and monetizing any counterculture it encounters. So prior to the 1950s jeans were mostly an item of work-wear that you wore on the job as a farmer or factory worker or miner because they were cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. If you were off the job you'd wear what we'd call now dress pants or slacks. This changes in the 1950s when youth culture start wearing jeans as regular clothing, again because they're cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. But then jeans get absorbed by the culture and we start getting designer jeans, acid-washed jeans, pre-ripped jeans, and now we got people shelling out hundreds of dollars for "povertycore" aesthetic. And now jeans aren't even cheap, durable, and hard-wearing.
This came up because my spouse was talking about thrifting and spooky things (two of her favorite things) and how there was this trend of buying a landscape painting from a thrift store which was probably going to end up in a garbage dump and painting a sheet ghost on it to make it art millennials would like. But now you can go to Michael's or Home Goods or wherever and just buy a landscape painting with a sheet ghost on it, mass-manufactured by a corporation. The counter-culture once again being monetized and absorbed by the culture. It's the jeans problem again.
Tourette's is kind of in a weird spot when it comes to classifying it as a disability. Like, is it an invisible disability? Well that depends. Is it a physical disability? Yeah, but it's caused by your brain. Is it neurodivergent? Yes, but it also has a strong physical manifestion. Is it a disability at all? Well that depends on if it's disabling, some people have it so severely they struggle with daily life, and some people have it so mildly it would never get diagnosed, and there's so much variation in between, which also fluctuates for everyone.
Sooo true!!! My tics were incredibly disabling for the first probably 4 years after they developed. But for the past couple years they have been a minor inconvenience mostly. They occasionally spike to a degree that is disabling or upsetting. But itâs much less common now
"cozy bookstore" "cozy cafe with a bookshelf" "omg imagine if there was a place you could just sit and read at" we have this its called the library. you guys want to go to the library. the two college libraries near me have cafes inside and they are open to the public. people need to go to the library
was discussing tumblr habits w somebody in a mutual discord server last night and they were so gobsmacked i like to ideally have 100+ posts in my queue at any given time đ how many do yâall have in your queue if you use it??
you know those studies showing that cursing helps with pain tolerance or whatever. thatâs how i feel about making my weird little noises to get through my basic daily activities. sometimes you just have to go hggblaaaah for a minute so you can find the strength within yourself to get up or wash the dishes or send an email. mmmnneh. urgh. the torments are unending but you can always make some little sounds about it.
some people can't fathom "rudeness" as a concept outside of identity, power, and oppression dynamics. so you point out they're being assholes and they start doing identity math at you to prove they're justified.
like sure, it's true that you are technically "punching up" in terms of that framework. but we're just hanging out rn, so why are you punching at all? you aren't challenging any power structures, you're just being mean to my friend kayla who has been nothing but lovely this evening.
"Punching up" is a concept from comedy anyway, its not a universal rule. Comedy has to have a punchline, so make it the people in power.
A discussion, a hangout, a barbecue doesnt need a punchline doesnt need any punching. Lower your fists. Try a differrent method of connecting to someone. Youre not immune to being an asshole, no one is.
IDK who needs to hear this but if there's something in your life that makes you feel better, but you never stick to it,
it's still actually perfectly fine to do it
and you shouldn't stop yourself from starting just because it won't be a permanent change.
Like if starting a new daily planner gives you an amazing afternoon of planning and four days where you feel in charge of your life,
why not do it?
It doesn't matter that it won't be a permanent change - 4 good days is still worth it.
If you ever catch yourself thinking, "I wish I could pray/stretch/prep/plan/do the thing, but I always get started on that and it never lasts more than a couple of days,"
what this really means is, "hey, I can feel better for a couple of days."
if this post is making you think of things in your own life that you wish you could stick to because of how good they make you feel,
just be aware:
you're not thinking of a list of ways you've failed to commit
you're thinking of a list of things that make you happy, and you should give yourself permission to start doing them as often as you want to
wow. that's a good post. in order to appreciate the post I will scroll up slightly to ensure I am reading the entire thing. ah, it would seem that my tumblr feed has refreshed, and the post is now gone forever. one should never get too attached
Imo the best type of system for children to grow up in would be one that assumes the birth parents/primary guardians won't do shit and takes care of every aspect of childcare that's essential for their wellbeing and development, collectively.
But I'm just a guy who only learned how to brush his teeth properly and got glasses as a child because we had both a dentist and a doctor come to school on a regular basis. The dentist would have us all stand in a circle with our little toothbrushes and show us how to brush and correct our technique. The doctors would give us general health assessments and then have the teachers contact our patents and essentially peer pressure them into getting us any health intervention we needed. My parents only reluctantly got me glasses because they knew the teachers would judge them if they kept seeing me sit in the very front row and still squint to see the chalkboard. So I'm biased.
The only times I ever remember seeing a dentist or doctor as a child was at school. I'm quite healthy physically and I'm very grateful for all the care I got from the various professionals who cared about my well-being and development more than my actual parents did.
We had free healthcare including dental, mind you, my parents just couldn't be bothered. When my brother, as a teenager, asked our mother if she could take him to his orthodontist appointments (which he'd already arranged for on his own) she basically told him she didn't feel like it and he had to take the bus.
If I could improve anything about that system, I'd take it even further and make it so kids could see a doctor and get meds, treatments, therapy, tests, disability aids etc. without having to rely on their parents as well. I shouldn't have had to put up with being bullied and guilt-tripped about the family finances and the time investment needed to take me to the optometrist every time I needed new glasses.
Some parents would not take care of their children even if they were given all the time and the resources. Mine are a great example of that â my mother stopped working and became a homemaker when I was in kindergarten, my father worked from the garage and was also always home. They had a car and our village even had a bus that would come once or twice an hour that would take you to the next two bigger cities.
Did that, plus the free healthcare, translate into them actually parenting and caring for us properly? It did not. They only ever did any of that reluctantly when not doing it would make them look bad, and most of the time they did a shitty job because they could never resist the urge to boost their egos by means of bullying literal children.
So I have to wonder: what did they actually contribute to our upbringing? Like they didn't teach us shit and mostly they just endangered our mental and physical health â but hey, at least they gave me cPTSD! That took some work too.
A knee-jerk response to neglectful parenting I see a lot is âpeople should have to get licenses and take rigorous tests to PROVE that they should be ALLOWED to have kidsâ which is eugenics. Thatâs just the starting line for eugenics.
We are at a point in humanity where there is no meaningful reason why we shouldnât be structuring our societies around wellbeing for all instead of wellbeing for the âdeservingâ.
Assume some parents will fail. Build social infrastructure that is designed to support failed kids rather than punish would-be parents.
They can be busy, tired, stressed about finances, ignorant, etc. They can want to do the best for their kid and Fail Anyways.
The best thing is to support the children and give them the tools they need to succeed even if the parents are already giving them those tools. Because you can never learn something too much.

you were almost turned into a vampire, but before you could be fully turned, the vampire was staked. This left you with a vampire weakness, while still being human.
Spin the wheel to find out your weakness!
How much does this effect you?
Nothing changes
It's inconvenient but I can deal with jty
It will be hard to adjust but I'll figure it out
I don't know if I'll be able to live like this
Maybe I can find another vampire to finish the turning?
I might just kill myself

thanks @theemmjay for submitting this poll idea!! Seriously it's such a cool concept I love it so much
hi itâs intersex day of remembrance so please remember that as of 2024 the trevor project has determined that 55% of intersex seriously considered suicide with 25% of them actually attempting it
âintersex liberation is anti-transfeministâ âintersex people shouldnât get their own words, theyâre the same as everyone else, stop giving them special treatmentâ âintersex pride isnât important, itâs romanticizing illnessâ âmost intersex people are actually thankful for the treatments they get because it means they can be normalâ âintersexism isnât a thing, youâre describing transphobiaâ âi know this person goes by she/her but theyâre intersex so i just use they/them on themâ OVER HALF OF INTERSEX YOUTHS WANT TO DIE. BE NORMAL ABOUT US. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL.
