There is no such thing as "European culture"

There is no such thing as a unified European, Western or White culture. As there is no unified Eastern or Asian culture. I get what they meant - puritan protestant English culture, predominantly sexist, classist and racist. The kind of Europe that bred the modern US which is perceived as the "Western culture" today. But that's not European. It's industrial period English. There is also a point to make for Athenean culture (not Greek or Ancient Greek, as Athen was more or less it's on country back then, even if it had some influence over the rest of what's now Greek - similar to how protestant English and Dutch views shaped huge parts of middle and northern Europe and extremist-catholic views shaped the Southeast). But then there is a French tradition, a German one, a Swedish, a Swiss, a Polish, an Italian, a Spanish etc. Europe is and will be a hodgepodge and that's surely one of the reasons why the EU as a political system is pretty useless (as of now, who knows how it will evolve). We all learned our diffrent lessons from history, from somewhat diffrent histories even. Have a look at the middle ages or the early modern times, look at how extremly diffrent we've progressed (especially England, Austria and France, a little bit later Germany). And then look at how we in Europe almost collectivley scratch our head about the US. It's diffrent. In a lot of ways. And we're proudly diffrent from each other as well. That's why Europe is rife with racism, but in a diffrent form than rascism happening in the US. That's why some problems don't seem to concern us (as much). Because we have our own typical problems which we should take care of first. And my, we have A LOT of them, even if we exclude things like colonialism and the major World Wars from the list. Does America even know that there's a 3000-year history between diffrent European contries and their cultures? Also: Disney stole European fairytales and made them into distinctive US-versions. The dwarfs had neither names nor personality, but the huntsman was a major character. Cinderella is an amalgamation of diffrent similar tales from middle and eastern Europe. And what the heck is this Rapunzel-story? (Don't get me wrong, I like Tangled a lot. But it's not the German tale anymore. And Frozen is an abomination of the original Andersen-story, as is The little Mermaid). The white US entertainment industry "steals" from all of us and makes it their own. So maybe we should come together instead of trying to hate on each other. This only empowers the wrong people.

Fandoms

I will list some of the fandoms I am willing to participate in. But don’t except me to be to involved, especially with fanarts and -fics. I am very bad a drawing and have to write tons for university and a living, so, no, not for hobby, too ^^

I like thinking and discussing about things and I love making AMVs, from which I sadly can only show so few, because at some points there will always be a copyright claim on either the song or the scenes (well, at least about the songs I finally can do something beforehand, with the scenes it’s far more complicated …). But ok, I will liszt now (well, that was a bad one, I know ^^)

Okay, it's children time

So I work as a tutor for one and a half year now, teaching children of all ages, from elementary to high school. And while most of this is rather unimpressive work, sometimes the little ones are gems. Really rough gems. Like two days ago one second grader asked me, if I've seen the match Portugal vs. Czech Republic (European championship; soccer/ football). I said: "No. I just followed the live ticker because I was with my friends that evening." He looked me dead in the eye and answerd, as dry as a desert: "But you don't have any friends." I chuckled. "Why do you think so?" He: "Because you're older than me." So apparently friendship comes with a "Best Before" ...

Okay folks: I’m working on a presentation about accessibility at zoos for an upcoming meeting.

One thing I’m touching on is the importance of supporting and welcoming real service dog teams. People sneaking their pets in / pretending ESAs are service dogs is becoming a real problem, and the general reflex I’m seeing in the industry is to just make it harder for anyone with a dog, so I want to ask the audience to think about that a little and consider other approaches to solving the problem.

I’d like to include a collage of photos of well-behaved service dogs at zoos and aquariums to help reinforce the point. Which means it’s photo request time! If you’ve got a photo of you / your service dog clearly at a zoo, aquarium, or other similar facility and would be willing to let me use it in this presentation, please chat/ask/email me (whyanimalsdothething @ gmail). I’m happy to block out human faces.

Knights of the Zodiac - The Movie

Watched it yesterday on it's premier day (and probably only scrreening day in Germany) and WHAT THE HELL WAS THIS? It's not the worst iteration for sure (this award goes to the Netflix-Season of the computeranimated show), but WTF? Who came up with the script and who thought this was a good idea? The movie is one confusing mess. It looks nice, the characters are decently funny. But the story? I don't think I would've understand any of it, if I wasn't into the series already.

And what did they do to Ikki/ Nero? Why is he behaving like Jabu of all characters? I didn't recognize him at all before they dropped his name HALFWAY INTO THE MOVIE.

And the character arcs of all mains where like "Oh, the script demands it". "I hate you, because, script. Now I love you, because, script." "You can't do this. Now you can, because, script." The script is atrocious. If it was funnier it would maybe have been good. So it's jsut good enough that I didn't feel betrayed. But than again, I watched with low expectations to begin with.

When I was at Cape Point a year ago, my inner compass was so well adjusted, that I directly turned southwards to point to antarctica - even so I life on the norther hemisphere, so I couldn't relay on the sun for directions (it was around noon with the sun high in the northern sky). I realized it a moment later that the sun was in my back, while I looked south and was astonished by myself. Guess doing geological fieldwork for far to long in my student years finally paid off.
