Dante's Vision of Rachel and Leah
Artist: Dante Gabriel Rossetti (English, 1828–1882
Date: 1855
Medium: Watercolour on paper
Collection: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom
Description
Dante's Vision of Rachel and Leah illustrates the third dream from Dante Alighieri's Purgatorio (Canto XXVII), where the biblical sisters Leah and Rachel appear in the Earthly Paradise. Leah, representing the active life, is gathering flowers, while Rachel, symbolizing the contemplative life, gazes at her reflection. The painting, commissioned by John Ruskin, shows these figures at a fountain as an allegory for the two paths to happiness in this life that Dante discusses in his Convivio.
