Rodent Obsession Pet Blog

Welcome to my pet blog! Currently, I have a cat named Blue Buggle and 3 rescue rats named Bruce, Disco and Dancer. I love to look at, play with, draw and study animals and pets allow an intimate look into the behaviour of these animals. All in all, we are a happy family of creatures. Our little family would like to encourage you to adopt small animals from shelters if you can. You'd be surprised how many rats end up in shelters.

BRUCE HAS A NAIL ON EACH THUMB NUB. HE HAS 20 NAILS INSTEAD OF 18. Also he's gotten fat since issues with his back feet he's on medication for and I've since changed the treats he was getting as well.

Edit; after having rats for 20 years, I still learn new things. Apparently rats do have a flattened nail on the thumb nub, it normally isn't as noticeable and is there to help grip food. It's likely more noticeable on Bruce because he's an older rat. Check your ratties hands and see if they got thumb nails and let me know!!

This isn't lighting. It's even more noticeable in person. He was completely grey/silver/blue when I got him. His rump and all the way up his belly has changed to this red/orange/brown colour out of the blue. It's even a lighter shade than the rest of the grey fur. His cage mates don't have any similar colour change, so it's not from the environment. He doesn't have excessive porpherin staining on his eyes, nose or wrists, so i don't think that's it. He's a rescue so I don't know is genetics, or really how old he is either. He shouldn't have a copper deficiency. I'm leaning toward molting or rusting. Thoughts?

Lil boys outside for the first time on a particularly warm spring day! For the two younger boys, this could be their first play outside ever. Bruce used to live outside and enjoyed himself, sniffing the air and bruxing to himself. They nibbled safe flowers and some pumkin seeds.

(Disclaimer; I was right in front of the cage opening the whole time, supervising and leaning over them incase of birds, and only letting them come out just in front of the door. I do not recommend new rat owners to play with them outside like this in case of escape. You need to have a firm grasp on their actual individual physical abilities as well as potential threats like birds and other animals. It is also possible to lose a rat because it startles and a fit rat can and will out run you when startled. I know how to handle these specific individuals in a way that keeps them safe while letting them touch grass.)

Bruce, Disco and Dancer, my new boys! They are rescue boys. Bruce was found living outside and is the most shy. He can be nippy but with time we'll work through it. He's smart and doesn't know what to think of me yet, but has started to get more comfortable. Disco is shy and bit me once but doesn't really bite at all now and is getting use to me. He watches both Dancer and Bruce on how to react to things. Dancer is the most social, seaks attention and is a bit of a goof ball. I can take him out of the cage and snuggle him but only for short amounts of time because 1, he's very springy and can't sit still for long and 2 he is still getting use to me.

My last good pictures of my blind snake food rescue, Larry, before he passed recently. The second picture is of us cuddling. He'd relax in my hand while I rubbed his cheeks and pet him and sometimes kiss his head. All he wanted was cuddling constantly near the end. He was beautiful, smart and sweet. I miss him so much.

Rescue mouse update

Mouse delivery has been moved to Sunday, but I did receive a picture of him. I'm naming him Louis, (loo-ee) and I'm extremely excited to welcome him home.

The rescue picked him for me. He was getting picked on by other mice but is really nice so I'm excited to meet him and show him his new life!
