this is a book about bravery. it's a romance for some characters but it's also about aromanticism. it's a reflection on autism and anxiety and trying to find out who you are and then be honest about that with the people who matter. it's extremely unserious and very serious. it may be my funniest novel yet and it makes me cry every time i read That One Part (you'll know what i mean, down the road). it's about falling in love with yourself and finding your way back to family and the bonds we forge with our siblings and those we choose as family and it's COMING OUT THIS YEAR.

successfully managed to get over that annoying little hurdle with swan song and managed to write about 2k+ today (mainly rewriting stuff from past to present tense). so here's a little snippet from a scene i fucking love.

"She might have sent me here, but killing you… That is not my intention," he lies. "No?" She says, crossing her arms against her chest. "Then what are they? Surely they must be important enough to reject whatever she dares offer you, and considering your a Varley who's reputation has been ruined, I can only imagine what she'll give you." "Answers is why I came here," Sebastian replies. Without thinking, he gets to his feet, ignoring the pain his body endures when he moves the wrong way, and he finds himself standing in front of her. He notices then just how tall she is, most women, he towers over them, but The Pretender is only just taller than he is. "My father claimed that the Queen was a fraud with his dying words, a death that only happened because he was trying to kill in your name, and I want to know why." "So you risked your life for answers?" "What if I did?" She leans further towards him, their noses almost touching. "Then you are nothing more than a fool." Then she moves away from him. "Is that your job now? Cast out and unable to be a knight that you became the fool in court that dances around with his bells jangling with every move, and failing to tell jokes to make the nobles laugh?" As she speaks, a smile appears on her lips. Something that almost looks unnatural with the fact that she wears. He cannot remember the last time that he saw the Queen smile.

Where are you? Nikolaos wonders. He misses Quintus like a stomachache, misses the ease with which he understood Quintus, and what Quintus wanted, and what Quintus needed. I don’t know what you want me to do.

Grip:

“Maybe you should make good on your word,” Quintus whispers into his ear, “Instead of stalling because you’re afraid of a good fight.” He feels Nikolaos’s back muscles shift against his own chest and tightens his grip eagerly. Nikolaos’s powerful body twists one way, testing, then the other, and Quintus has just enough time to think making him work for it, not bad, when he loses his hold and goes flying over Nikolaos’s shoulder, hitting the water again headfirst.

Smile:

Quintus feels his hackles rising and tries not to let it show. “I am not as young as I look,” he says evenly. “And do not mistake youth for inexperience.” Percival holds up his hands, a smile toying around his mouth. “I mean no hostility, sir.” “Then I take no offense,” Quintus replies, turning back to his horse, wishing he were someplace else, preferably where there is a hot bath.

Brush:

Eyes shutting in disquiet, Nikolaos sighs, low and long. It’s his apology, a needless one, and Quintus gently brushes a hand over Nikolaos’s forehead as one in return. “I’ve got to, I should,” Nikolaos says, struggling to sit up. Quintus tightens his arm, refuses to let him go. “No.”

interrupting others who might say something revealing or important, thinking around things, using words like “didn’t” or “doesn’t” or “imagines” to describe actions not taken or half taken, dreaming things and never talking about them or thinking about them during waking hours, lying to people, hiding true feelings, sitting in shadow or low light to keep any accidental flicker of emotion hidden, writing in obtuse ways that doesn’t let the reader know what they’re thinking or planning, avoiding adverbs in tense moments, describing actions in straightforward and almost clinical ways sometimes, hiding the truth from the character and the reader even though you both know or suspect but there is just enough space there to fill with doubt
