The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

fascinated by the way friday the thirteenth’s own legacy as a franchise has recontextualized the first movie, because obviously that the killer was a middle-aged woman in a sweater and not A Scary Murder Man was always a plot twist, but now it’s enhanced if you watch the movie only having the bare essential knowledge of this franchise (that Jason is the Scary Murder Man, and maybe not being aware of his mom at all.) So, modern day, you spend the whole movie waiting for Jason, where’s Jason, when’s Jason show up, only for Mrs Voorhees to come out instead and all she’s gotta say is her name for you to go. 😨 oh. shit.

like metatextually, there’s this thing people do with horror movies where, knowing the killer and their modus operandi, they go well I wouldn’t die in this film because I’d know the rules. And now, because Jason as a horror icon even more than the character he is overshadows the series so overwhelmingly, you could potentially go into this film thinking, “well, I’d survive cause I’d know to be on the lookout for a scary hockey mask murder man” and come out thinking, “that milf would’ve gotten my ass, i wouldn’t have seen her coming at all.”

It's true that dying instantly of a wound in the gut isn't typical, despite it being a common trope in many action movies, although it's a fact that a gut wound is like a hundred percent going to guarantee someone isn't going to bother you for a good long while. However, the main reason so many USAmerican action films make a gut wound fatal is the language of drama. The audience understands that although the person technically wouldn't die quickly, it's simply not feasible to take the time and show their slow, lingering death as a consequence of being unable to afford health care in the USA, either without treatment, getting treatment but unable to afford the necessary medication afterwards, or merely the attrition brought on by poverty as a consequence of medical billing.
