On Effieâs first visit back to 12, a severe storm rages through forcing her and Haymitch to spend a long and uninterrupted night together - remembering both good times and bad, catching up on who they are now, and discovering what the future might hold.

The argument came out of nowhere; the shouting followed quickly after. They had been preparing dinner after a long day spent outdoors, enjoying the brisk fall weather. This was Effieâs favorite time of year, and Haymitch had surprised her with some warm apple cider and a long walk through the forest to see the changing leaves. Walking hand in hand, leaves crunching underfoot⊠It had been such a pleasant day, the first in awhile, and the sudden mood shift threw her off balance.
Why she was surprised, she didnât know. It had been happening so much lately.

After Effie takes a temporary teaching position at Haymitchâs college, heâs ecstatic about having more time with his best friend. When she jokingly suggests pretending to date after their students start to meddle in their personal business and attempt to set them up, he doesnât hesitate in saying yes. Unbeknownst to Effie, he has imagined her being more than his friend for years, those thoughts often regulated to his day dreams. The longer they commit to pretending though, the harder it gets to hide their true feelings for each other.
