maybe something less talked about re coach athlete relationships is that the coach’s “favorite” is not always the best or fastest or most talented on the team. like of course they’ll like, even love, the stars but the passionate coaches want someone they can have ownership over, in a way. like ‘oh i found this diamond in the rough, they weren’t as naturally gifted but i crafted and molded them into this’. it’s not like, it’s not love, it’s an obsession— the pieces you craft from the ground up by yourself are more satisfying than a piece that is maybe objectively better but wasn’t completely your own.

there’s nothing more alluring the the shine of potential for a sicko coach. you see a young kid that’s maybe middle of the pack, but they have a certain fire in their eyes that they’ll do anything to get ahead, and the work ethic to go along and it’s 100% like finding a diamond in the rough.

and so it’s a symbiotic parasitic two way relationship, right. of course the athlete benefits from the extra focus from the coach and gets better that way, but the coach also gets emotional highs and lives through the athlete. if their pet project somehow even beats or gets better than the original stars of the team then deep down, they’re happy because look, it was their teaching and their mentoring that got them there, not just natural talent. there’s a level of ownership that comes with a deep coach athlete bond.

and it’s just so easy to pick out these shiny potential players, right. they have a certain degree of natural talent of course, but you know immediately a couple practices in. they put their head down and work, they listen to your every word like it’s the word of god, they are just so responsive to feedback, good or bad, and if you chew them out then they come scampering back trying to win you over. certain athletes don’t really care for that, they keep a boundary with their coach, it’s just a sport at the end of the day to them, and no one person can dictate their success, they were talented before you and they will be talented after you. but to these shiny potentials, they treat your perception and your word like life or death, it feels like they will ruin their body for you they will push themselves past the point of no return for you. and how could you not get a high from that? after a good performance the first person they seek out is you, not their parents or their friends, it’s straight to you, the coach, because both of you know there’s no one else in the world that understands that the athlete wants to feel the sting of your fangs deep deep inside their arteries and that the blood of someone you crafted is the sweetest of them all.
