Something I noticed when re-watching this scene: on the left, there is a doorway, and next to it an anti-kaiju poster (“Destroy This Mad Brute”), and an ordinary table lamp, and what looks like some sort of framed photo, maybe…? Basically, items that are more “domestic” than what is found elsewhere in the lab.

It sort of makes it look like Newt and Hermann’s living quarters might be adjacent to the lab, not in the dormitories where the pilots are.

I have found further evidence that may just support this.

There are two doors on Hermann’s side of the lab, both are located up on that little platform toward the front of the room. Assuming that the lab is symmetrical (and from everything that I’ve seen, it is) Newt must have those same doors as well.

Now, they might not be living quarters. They could be storage closets or something else entirely. However, I think it’s a reasonable conclusion that the Shatterdome would be built with the scientist’s quarters adjacent to the labs, allowing them easy access to their research at all hours of the day. (Perhaps Hermann and/or Newt had some input in the planning? I know they were involved in the PPDC from it’s early stages…. Though I’m sure they never counted on being forced to share a lab…)

Oh gosh, I think this is going to lead me to doing a full breakdown and schematic of the K-Science lab…. FOR SCIENCE!!!!

Oh my god, that’s adorable if it’s true. And your reasoning is thorough and impressive, so I accept that headcanon too! :d Just imagine Newt and Hermann toiling away and then going back into their little rooms like figures in a cuckoo clock! >3<

I actually tried to sketch out the lab layout for my own comic making purposes awhile back.

A lot of that is guesswork, and the blue highlights are the areas we see on screen.

I thought it funny to imagine Newt’s room on Hermann’s side, and Hermann’s room on Newt’s side. Like, that’s how their shit got moved in, and they just never had the time/energy to straighten it out. XD
