The questions continued, and the creature found himself sitting on that first one a moment longer than most probably would. A hum, large hands continuing to poke and prod the fire to make sure it at least kept lit without him. "I. . . can. It does not harm me to do so." A short answer, pupils mismatched and watching the flicker of the flames. "I can't say if I. . . need to, or not." This was beyond his knowledge of himself. Awoken one day and left to wander the world. Intelligent, but lost. A hunger in his stomach he assumed normal food might quench, but never did. A mystery to those around him just as much as he was to himself, it seemed. "Always. . . cold?" Now it seemed to be the creature's turn to ask the questions. Dull eyes blinking once, twice, then finding the pale elf beside him. A curiosity in his expression but nothing more to push for an answer if one was not to be given.

' you don't hunger? thirst? ' he at least feels some horrible , itching amalgam of those. blood is a sustenance as much as anyone may take from bread and water all in the same , convenient package. though , if he didn't perhaps he'd see it as a freedom. perhaps the creature he sits beside is on some other level away from mortal than even he is. deathly and deathless all in the same turn no matter what happens to him , but astarion strays from those thoughts now as he's asked a question back.

' hm. ' nothing but a contemplative , if agreeing hum. ' unless in a very hot bath , or quite near a fire , but it's ... not the same. at least not like them. ' a glance toward the tents of their companions. ' i'm not terribly warm on the inside. it doesn't stay. ' there's a little waver in his voice that perhaps betrays how he misses it , at least what he can recall. now he simply soaks up heat like marble , it sinking into his cold bones and disappearing fast. but no matter , and some smirk moves his observations along quickly. ' and you? your hands must be quite toasty by now , friend. ' @odditymuse

Halsin looked down at the now dead man. A shame. A pity, actually. Such wasted life... and for what? Was he but a mere bandit? Had Halsin acted too swiftly? Too carelessly? No, they had been armed, and ready to strike and kill. If he hadn't have acted, Astarion might have been properly attacked. His vampire companion likely could have fended for himself, but there was always the what if that lingered...

"No," he replied, a frown pressing against his features, the scars of his lips stretching. He crouched, rolling the corpse over. "But the roads are perilous these days. Bandits, assassins... and so many gods." When he rolled them over, he saw the pendant that sat at the assassin's throat.

"The Absolute, it appears." He dropped the blood soaked chain and breathed a soft sigh. "Strange that they would attack, considering they have been welcoming to your visitors." The tadpoles that connected them. Halsin was pleased that he did not share that ailment with the camp.

"Perhaps they have been tipped off by someone that your mission is to slay their god." He looked around. "But where one assassin lurks, there is sure to be more. We should stand guard and search the perimeter." He stood back up and looked at the cut on his arm, his own blood trickling down the thick muscle of his bicep.

With a quick spell, the wound was gone, flesh stitched back together. After all, Halsin was a healer also. He turned back to Astarion. "Are you certain you are alright?"

it's somewhat of a relief to see that ugly sigil of the absolute worn around the stranger's neck , for at least that rules out this being any work of cazador's. he can hardly imagine the vampire lord being in league with the very thing that stole him away onto that dreadful ship , so at least in that regard perhaps he can rest easy for a moment. but he still eyes the druid curiously , for perhaps the answer lies with him instead.

' they captured you at the goblin camp for being terribly nosy , did they not? maybe word has gotten out that you escaped , rescued by a bunch of dashing heroes ... and gale. ' a roll of his shoulders , and he scans the treeline with those ruby eyes of his. anything to tear his attention away from the scent of fresh blood and the racing heartbeat of halsin's that he can hear thudding much too close for comfort.

he does idle as the druid heals himself , though. glances back to watch the wound disappear as if it never happened , despite some snatched view of that rivulet of blood trickling down muscle —— so astarion huffs at his question , arms crossed about himself as if to call his own temptations into some kind of order. ' the only complaint i have currently is an empty stomach , which is neither here nor there in your realm of worry , i assure you. ' a few steps toward the forest are made. ' we should see if there are any others , agreed , and then decide what we're to do with this body once we've done so. ' @honeydrvid

yet , astarion does find with slight trepidation and then amusement that his stare keeps having to travel up , and up , and up , to meet the eyes of the tiefling that has approached his table in the shadowy corner of the blushing mermaid. his own have a soft , ethereal glow about them that she will no doubt notice , if not quite distracted by how his pale brows have shot upward at the sight of her.

' well , hello. cliffgate , i imagine? ' he can't remember her first name. not that he tried particularly hard to remember it , but the description was terribly lacking , at least for her stature and the great axe at her back. just a tiefling , he'd been told , and not the absolute powerhouse that stands before him. still , he gives a pointed if cordial smile as he waves a delicate hand , inviting her to sit. @taleswritten

sometimes i just think again about how neil is the only guest at a con ever to ask for my consent to shake my hand or put his arm around me for a photo and also check in that the prolonged contact was still okay when our photo was interrupted by someone talking to him. the only one. ever.

"Am I?" Jaskier asks as he continues to twirl one of Astarion's white curls in his fingers, twisting it this way and that as he truly takes in the texture and the feel of it. "And here I thought I was playing with your hair."

It's been an adjustment, being the spawn of a spawn, but he's decided to adopt the principal of radical acceptance about it. There is hardly anything that can be done to reverse such a condition, save divine intervention or a Wish spell. Neither does Jaskier think he'll have the chance of coming across, especially anytime soon with this Cult of the Absolute business ahead of him.

So any sort of distraction is better than nothing, even if it does annoy his sire, but he has to get the texture of Astarion's hair right for the portrait he's been sketching for the past few hours.

"If it's really that annoying, I'll stop, but then this drawing will never be finished and you'll never be able to see you the way I see you."

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥. while he doesn't hate the attention , the way the bard goes about it with an air of complete ease despite the circumstances is what rattles. he's a newly made spawn , a creature of the night , and yet seems to have stopped himself from slipping into that deep despair. the one where they lament what wretched beasts they now are , and instil centuries worth of self-loathing in moments.

perhaps some of astarion's irritation lies in the fact that none of the rest of them feel as he does. not even his siblings , probably. yet in the immediate sense jaskier is the closest to knowing what this awful existence is like , and even then he's better at it than he was. he stares back at him flatly , and realises that perhaps he wants to see him suffer. just a little bit. then he wouldn't be so alone in that.

even so , he hasn't seen himself in two hundred years. while he's aware he can charm , so can those with faces that would never grace statues. most make up for it with a twinkle in their eye and smooth talking , of which he has in spades , and so the vampire spawn is anxious to know. does he look like he thinks he does? or will the face staring back at him be something so alien it may as well be a mindflayer already? which is why he's avoided looking at the paper that jaskier furiously sketches onto.

' biased , then? a portrait of the terrible creature that stole your life essence away from right under your nose. what a treat that'll be. shall i bear my fangs so you can get a better look for my snarling , hissing expression? ' it's said mildly enough as he reclines further against the pile of pillows outside his tent , pretending to continue reading the book he's stolen from the camp chest. @dandiestbard
