In unintended, reflexive contrast, Zevlor's shoulders tensed a bit in surprise when Halsin remarked on them. He hadn't thought he could loosen them any further, when this was the most at ease he'd felt since before Elturel was dragged down. He tried to unwind his shoulders more, though his hands remained behind his back for now - in part because he wasn't sure what else to do with them.

Zevlor waded a bit deeper as well, until the water was only an inch or so below the hems of his breeches. He kept his tail above the surface, curled further, lest any passing fish mistake it for bait. Though he hadn't expected Halsin's question, he saw no reason to refuse answering. The novelty had more to do with how rarely he'd mentioned his past to anyone else, especially given the inquiries that followed.

"It was my choice. I suppose rising in the ranks was mostly out of my hands, but joining the Hellriders was not." His gaze lifted again, lingering on the moon. Though it wasn't any direct parallel to the Companion, it still tugged a little more at Zevlor's bittersweet nostalgia. "I admired them since I was a boy, like many Elturians. Though, I suppose I play-acted at being an adventurer like my father just as often," he chuckled. "But I loved my family, and my neighbors and friends. I wanted to know they were safe, ensure they lived well, ease their fear... see them smile." His own lips quirked upward. "That was what spurred me to follow the Creed Resolute."

Looking to Halsin once more after a long beat, Zevlor added, "Perhaps something similar led you on your path? Your love and compassion are of admirable expanse." As if the druid sought to encompass the whole world in those broad, gentle arms; no doubt he could, though Zevlor still worried how the man might be hurt trying.

Most boys did, Halsin thought. They'd watch their fathers become protectors, and wish to follow in their footsteps. Or perhaps their mothers, it didn't matter. Children mimicked and mirrored their parents, even when they didn't realise they were doing it. Halsin supposed he was no different in that sense, although he had always preferred to roam freely on his own. Until it came to a point where he could not.

Leadership was thrust upon him. He had been just as foolish as any young man in his youth. Just as rebellious. Leadership changed a man, though. Lives had depended on him, and consequences were great.

He supposed that even he was selfish in the desire to return to a life of simplicity and freedom. For there were many shackles in leadership, and no doubt Zevlor understood those as well. But Zevlor was also a man of deep honour to his god of justice.

A softened expression moved across the druid's lips before he chuckled. "Do not let my position as Archdruid fool you, I was quite the foolish young lad in my youth. Responsibility and caution was not exactly in my nature." He hummed a soft noise from his nostrils then.

"Like many young boys, I made a fool of myself to impress the boys and girls around me. I upset the balance and order. Let children be children, of course, but... we all must learn eventually." And at times, they didn't have much of a choice. Sometimes fate forced their hands.

He soaked himself deeper into the water, undoing his hair and letting it fall down his shoulders. "My father was a brave man, and a serious one. Naturally, I rebelled against his order." Like most children did. "Now, I am the last of my line. I did not know what that meant for many years, but now... I suppose you are never too old to learn."

My favorite thing about Halsin is that he unabashedly CARES and refuses to stop caring. No matter what he goes through. No matter how hopeless he feels. He refuses to stop caring, to the point that it causes him pain more often than not.

He refuses to stop caring about refugees. He refuses to accept Baldur's Gate's status quo. He refuses to stop fighting the Shadow Curse that everyone else wrote off as unbreakable. Even when captured by goblins, he tried to cure them of their tadpoles and only gave up on them when they started torturing him and threatening his Grove instead.

He refuses to stop caring about the state of the world, and the struggle between his duties as a Druid and his own desire for a family (because he also refuses to stop caring for the then-hypothetical children he dreamed of). He refuses to stop caring about the balance between humanity and nature. He refuses to stop caring about his devotion to Silvanus and he refuses to stop caring about his friends, even when one of them, as an undead, is the embodiment of everything Druids are supposed to hate as the summation of everything "unnatural."

He refuses to stop caring about the family he lost years ago. He refuses to stop caring about those under his watch, to the point that if the Druids die in the Druid vs Tiefling fight, Halsin blames himself instead of them.

He CARES. In a world that- very similar to ours- tries to punish and beat down people who care, that tries to wear them into a state of numb apathy, Halsin continues to love, and care, and want better for those who need it. He refuses to stop being the voice for the voiceless.

Every world needs a Halsin, or ideally many Halsins.

@honeydrvid continued. 𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. all kinds of dangers lie in wait out here , and the moment he'd been confronted he'd held nothing in his hand to fight with. precious seconds to snatch up a knife from the table at the corner of his tent's pitch , all wasted for the fact the druid had taken matters into his own , bare hands. and so now he's waving his knife about to emphasise his point , red eyes wide with the scene before him. halsin so easily tearing their sneaky adversary apart before he has time to react , and astarion's unruly curls simply wave about while so very animated in his surprise. still clutches at the table beside his tent , a breath taken that he hardly needs as his shoulders begin to drop and tensions settle. the smell of the blood is heavy on his senses , and the vampire can feel how it tempts. makes saliva well under his sharp tongue , and how his gaze lingers on the cuts against halsin's terribly thick and lovely arms. but the druid would probably snap his neck just as easily should he ever ask , for what was he but something unnatural? against the order of things , surely. ' no , i'm not ---- ' another huff of breath outward , the knife thrown down onto the table with a clatter. he looks at the rather dead assassin with a sideways tilt of his head , sidling closer only to nudge him with his foot. makes the corpse roll to the side and make his face more visible , but astarion doesn't recognise him. ' you know him? i don't. '

Halsin looked down at the now dead man. A shame. A pity, actually. Such wasted life... and for what? Was he but a mere bandit? Had Halsin acted too swiftly? Too carelessly? No, they had been armed, and ready to strike and kill. If he hadn't have acted, Astarion might have been properly attacked. His vampire companion likely could have fended for himself, but there was always the what if that lingered...

"No," he replied, a frown pressing against his features, the scars of his lips stretching. He crouched, rolling the corpse over. "But the roads are perilous these days. Bandits, assassins... and so many gods." When he rolled them over, he saw the pendant that sat at the assassin's throat.

"The Absolute, it appears." He dropped the blood soaked chain and breathed a soft sigh. "Strange that they would attack, considering they have been welcoming to your visitors." The tadpoles that connected them. Halsin was pleased that he did not share that ailment with the camp.

"Perhaps they have been tipped off by someone that your mission is to slay their god." He looked around. "But where one assassin lurks, there is sure to be more. We should stand guard and search the perimeter." He stood back up and looked at the cut on his arm, his own blood trickling down the thick muscle of his bicep.

With a quick spell, the wound was gone, flesh stitched back together. After all, Halsin was a healer also. He turned back to Astarion. "Are you certain you are alright?"
