I don’t like the idea of low prestige and low paying jobs not being “adult” or “grown up” or even “real” jobs. Any job is a real job. 99% of jobs really ONLY want to hire adults. (Not being able to hire minors=/=actively throwing minors’ applications out because you don’t want to work around the laws—there are no federal laws in the US protecting people under the age of 40 for age discrimination)

But we know what’s really being said here. It’s the same rationalization conservatives and beyond use to keep the minimum wage low. By implying a job is only for children—when the reality of the matter is that even business insider reported that the average fast food worker is right above 26 years old—not only are you implying something very ageist about minors deserving to be paid less, you’re also being classist by implying a low prestige job is not a real job.

Why are you doing the conservatives’ work for them? Take pride in your work. Low paying, low prestige jobs, jobs that are considered low skill, entry level jobs, and gig/contract work are all jobs and if you’re trying to be a leftist you have to value labor as important no matter what kind of labor it is. Not to mention saying these kinds of things about the kinds of jobs mentioned really reeks of ableism and racism too. Who’s concentrated in these jobs at higher proportions than white collar and more “respectable” blue collar jobs? Jobs that don’t require a lot of physical strength or access to education or networking or just being a nepo baby. Who, out of the population, is more likely to have a mix and match of the characteristics in my last sentence? You’re helping absolutely nobody by dismissing certain types of jobs because one day you’ll be done with college and work a white collar “real” job that you can put on your LinkedIn profile. What a joke.

People are going to see this and go "oh do you think real treatment that helps people is bad and no one should do it." I think people should be allowed to do whstever the fuck they want. I just think people aren't very honest about the psychological toll these treatments can have, which is the number one reason people either don't complete ERP, never start it, or it doesn't work for them. People act like purposefully triggering yourself is nbd bc it "isn't real" and if you cant handle it, you just werent committed to "processing your discomfort enough," and that's the attitude most psychiatrists have as well.
