Something I’ve noticed in Season 3 of The Originals and i can’t stop think about is that Camille tells Klaus she lost the affection she had for him as a human when she turned — basically pushing him away. We obviously know that’s not true, and Klaus clearly knows it too. After this, he tells Hayley that it’s not his job to be there for Cami anymore and asks Hayley to do it for him. Her rejecting him — for once — made him give up on “them” that easily.
But then, in the same season, during the crossover episodes with The Vampire Diaries, when Stefan visits New Orleans, the first thing Klaus asks him is about Caroline’s well-being — whether he’s treating her right or not. Stefan says, “Am I too optimistic to think we’d never see each other again?” and Klaus replies, “Well, that depends. Are you going to do the right thing by her?”
That shows he’s still protective over Caroline and would step in if Stefan hurt her. He even thanks Stefan when Stefan promises he’ll only do right by her. After all these years, and despite the fact that Caroline repeatedly rejected him — and is now in a serious relationship with someone else — he still hasn’t let go of his interest in her life and well-being. He never gave up on her.
Compare that to Camille: when she was in her transition, Klaus begged her to turn even though she didn’t want to. He told her he knows she would be as strong and fierce as she was when she was human (I don’t remember the exact words), and she replied, “You know nothing about me.” And honestly, he really doesn’t. After three years, he still didn’t understand her or how to be there for her when she needed someone. So he pushes Hayley to do it for him.
But when Stefan tells Klaus that the twins aren’t Caroline’s biological children — hinting that she might hand them over to Alaric — Klaus responds sarcastically:
“So she carried two lives in her womb, gave birth to them, and now she plans to turn them over to Alaric without so much as a hiccup of hesitation? Yeah, you’re right, that does sound like the Caroline I remember.”
He immediately sees through it. He understood her — even more than her boyfriend at the time. And later, when Caroline hesitates, she does end up keeping and raising the twins. Considering they only spent several months with each, unlike him with cami or stefan with caroline who spent years together, and still, he knew better.
Klaus was even able to comfort her over a phone call — just one phone call — where he promised he’d insure Stefan a safety, even after threatening to kill Stefan earlier. Because he sensed Caroline’s stress and fear. And the look on her face after that call ended — it was priceless. She believed him. That single call showed how much influence they had on each other, even after three years apart.
In contrast, with Camille, Klaus didn’t know how to comfort or connect with her when it wasn’t about fixing himself. He even tried to force her to stay in the compound to protect her— clearly against her will — until Hayley had to step in again because she actually knew what Camille needed at that moment. Klaus didn’t.
Call it unrequited love, lust, or physical attraction but Stefan never understood Caroline like Klaus did. And Klaus never understood Camille like he understood Caroline.
Klamille served Klaus’s redemption arc.
Klaroline served both Klaus and Caroline — despite their flaws.
It’s crazy how people say, “It’s impossible to watch The Originals and still ship Klaroline because Klaus forgets all about her with Camille.” When during the most intimate parts of his relationship with Camille, it’s obvious that he still hadn’t moved on from Caroline.
(I know it’s widely accepted in The Originals fandom that Camille was Klaus’s true love and the one he connected most with romantically — but this is just my take on it and how I see it. Klamillers, don’t attack me! It’s just how i see it 😊)
