Summary: After your first time together, Jack is completely smitten with you and begs for you to come to his work so he can rub it in everyone’s face.
warnings: fluff! Mentions of the age gap insecurity, anxiety in the ER.
author note: alright in this case our reader is a high achieving woman who works in advertising (because i work in advertising haha) but i could def see reader as a professor or like a researcher. very smart, confident, and powerful. And thank you to @holyhozierwp for this wonderful idea, this was such a good idea to show Jack as just a sweet giddy old man <3. Don’t worry pt 4 will be nastyyyyy i promise
When you both caught your breath, you actually did in fact eat breakfast. The mood in the room shifted. Jack looked lighter, happier. Talking to you about his job, how he works with the SWAT team as a tactical emergency medical service (which you still don’t understand what the means), and his time in the Middle East. You found yourself watching his face light up with each story. Talking with his hands, his eyes animating with each word, you stopped eating and got lost in the sight of him.
Jack felt like he could keep talking forever. The way you looked at him truly made him feel like you wanted to hear it all. All the stupid old man jokes he could make that actually had you laughing. Stories about the ER that led you to ask questions about procedures and “What does that even mean?” He felt free to talk about everything and anything with you.
He started grabbing your empty plate when you stopped him. Taking it out of his hands as you got up.
“You took care of me…” you sang, clearing up the plates, “Let me take care of you.”
He watched you trail to the kitchen sink, carefully washing each dish and placing them on the drying rack.
“I haven’t even asked…what do you do for work?” He asked.
“You haven’t asked at all,” you joked. “I work in advertising. Just make campaigns and commercials.”
He was taken back a little. Sexy and with a crazy ass job. Well holy shit.
“Well that’s pretty cool,” He laughed a little in disbelief. Jack always assumed he would end up with someone at work. A nurse or another doctor that could understand the life and emotions that comes with saving lives. But this beautiful woman in front of him washing his dishes was uncharted territory. She was someone he would need to explain everything to, really bring her into his world and show it all. It made him a little nervous as he sat there.
“Does your leg give you any trouble?” You asked.
“Nah,” he said playfully, taking it off and putting it on the table. “Can’t really feel it at all.”
You let out a laugh at how ridiculous he was. “You know what I like about you?”
“Hm?”
“You actually enjoy your life.” You said, turning off the faucet. “You have been through so much, and have seen so much. And everything you have said to me has been said with such joy. I think that’s really special.”
You walked over to him, pressing your lips to his forehead. It was warm, reassuring, kiss every now and then Jack needed to remind him that he was allowed to live his life.
________________________________________________________________
It’s been a couple of months since the first time you and Jack met, and now you two were inseparable. Going back and forth between his home and apartment. On his days off he wanted nothing more than to be at your apartment and watch you work. Listen to you in your office during meetings quickly thinking of ideas, presenting, talking with a force that drove him crazy. You got him out of his normal routine. Slower mornings, actually eating before going to work.
Folks could tell something was different about Jack. His first shift back after your first time together he wouldn’t hear the end of it from day shift as they finished up. Poking fun at the fact you were super hot, and he didn’t know what to do with “all of that.” He rolled his eyes, being a gentleman not saying anything crude or disrespectful to you.
“So what happened?” Robby asked on the rooftop.
Jack smiled. “We had a good time.”
“You had a good time?”
“Yeah.” Jack said, digging his hands into his pocket trying hard not to let out a telling smile. “We had a great time.”
“And you’re gonna keep seeing her?”
“Yeah.”
Robby shook his head laughing. “Good luck to you man.”
And from then on he was excited to mention you in any conversation.
Yeah, she and I are going to the natural history museum this weekend.
I’ll have to see if she doesn’t have something planned for us. No actually I’m going home right after because she found a new soup recipe and I’m really excited to try it.And when you started packing him food…it was game over. The first time you handed him a lunch box he realized, he never owned a lunch box.
“Wait a minute? You bought me a lunch box?” He said confused.
“Yeah! It’s cute right?” It was simple. Navy blue with black and silver trimming. It had a long shoulder strap and a compartment to store a thermal cup. “I think this fits your vibe.”
“My vibe?” He turned it around, inspecting it. “This is like you’re sending me to school.”
“Oh come on Jack. Lots of people go to work with a lunchbox.”
He was a little hesitant. All the guys are going to give me so much shit. But one look at you, with your perfectly soft face, the smile that made him melt as you so proudly handed him this lunchbox, who was he to ruin this for you? So he slung it over his shoulder proudly. Walking through the door of the ER with confidence. Knowing that his sexy young girlfriend had cooked for him and packed him this with a lot of love. Dana cocked her eyebrow as he walked in.
“She’s fattening you up before killing ‘ya?” She joked.
“She can do whatever she wants to me.” Jack replied. It took Dana by surprise, watching him walk into the break room where he would store his lunchbox in the fridge. And it became a common occurrence. When you weren’t on crazy calls, or not out on a shoot somewhere, you were giving Jack his lunchbox before his shift. And he looked forward to it each time. Giddy to see what surprises you left for him. Sometimes you wrote dumb little notes, sometimes you snuck in a cookie or even a beer can when you sensed the night was going to be a tough one.
One afternoon as he was getting ready for his shift, he begged again.
“Just 10 minutes.” He pleaded.
You peered up from your laptop to see him shirtless. His bare chest looked toned with his freckles framing every muscle. You traced your eyes down to his perfect little ass in his boxer briefs.
“Jack, I'm swapped.” You said apologetically.
It had been several weeks since he asked you to come visit him at work. He joked at first, saying he wanted to parade his sexy girlfriend to everyone so they can know who’s been giving him the hickies on his neck he was bad at hiding. Who was making him rush to the bathroom to send you another risque text at night, who was taking up his life in the most delicious way. He wanted nothing more than to see you walk through those doors, and show everyone that you were his.
“I know baby, I know.” His voice dropped. Something Jack was not good was telling you when he was actually hurt. And every time you’d say no, it was another blow to his mushy heart.
Maybe she doesn’t want people to know she’s with an old man? She’s embarrassed by you.
It was conversations you’d have before. Jack looking at you over dinner, or out on a date and asking you again if you’re sure you want to be with him. He could understand if the age freaked you out. If you wanted someone more your age. More attractive. More you.
And you’d always shake your head and tell him to stop thinking that. Not only was he the sexiest man in the world, you were exactly where you wanted to be, with him.
You knew every time you said no it crushed his spirit. He’d hang his head lower, he’d get quiet, he would feel too ashamed to even look at you. And the reason you said no wasn’t because you were too embarrassed to be with him or that you didn’t love him, it’s the fact that you weren’t ready to see him there. Covered in blood, the screaming, the running around and all the noises from the different machines. Seeing Jack as Dr. Abbot and not the man that sings to you when he’s cooking. Or the man that carries you back to the car when your heels have blistered your feet. You were not ready to see these demons he talked about.
“Jack, I'm sorry.” You whispered.
He couldn’t stay upset. He could be hurt, but he could never leave work without kissing you. As he slipped on his shirt he walked over to you and gave you a sweet kiss.
“I know baby.”
He went to his shift, lunch box in hand, trying to get through the night so he could find you curled up in the mattress, and sneak in a moment to wrap his arms around you before you started work.
You ended up sleeping early. Tossing and turning, trying to get Jack’s frown out of your mind, but by 1 AM your mind was fully buzzing. You hated how you made him feel. You hated how you know it’s eating him up at work while he’s trying to focus. And you hated that you were still scared. It’s really not that hard to show up for him. He always shows up for you. To every work event. Every shoot. You gotta let yourself go into his world. You have to.
Something came over you. You thought well if “I’m gonna show up to his work, I have to make it big.”
You spent several hours downstairs in the kitchen making food for the doctors and nurses. Chocolate chip muffins. Breakfast sandwiches. Roasted potatoes. Hell you cut up all the fruit you had in your fridge and assembled them into larger serving trays. You looked at the time, almost 4 AM. It was time to get yourself ready. Hop in the shower. Recurl your hair, do your makeup a little too nice, and wear a good outfit. You kept it simple with a baby tee that lifted your breasts up just right, jeans that cupped your ass, and a pair of cowboy boots you wear often to set.
The drive over there made your heart flutter. All the stories, the late nights of hearing him try not to cry. The way sometimes he would just sit on his side of the bed for a moment and stare into nothing until you’d pull him into you and hear his heart pounding. You were going to the source. And for Jack he so desperately wanted to know you were choosing him, all of him. With these demons and all.
You parked your car, juggling the trays of food and your purse. The ambulances were parked outside, just like Jack described it. You noticed some familiar faces, the day shift folks that were at the bar you met Jack. You felt shy for a moment, trying to hide your face, not be seen. Oh my god just walk dummy. You stood in front of the door, looking inside to the large white rooms with too many bodies moving around back and forth in a frantic synchronization that only makes sense to people that work there. But to you it was dizzying. You stepped on one foot at a time. The sight was almost too much for you. The yelling, the sound of the carts being moved around, the phone blaring.
“Hey miss!” A security guard called out. “Are you family?”
“What?”
“Family of a patient?”
“No I—”
“Then I can’t have you in here miss. Check in is on the other side.”
“But I’m here for Jack.”
With perfect timing you saw him coming out of a trauma bay with Robby. As the security guard tried to push you out, Jack saw you. His heart dropped, in the best way.
“Oh my god.” He breathed out.
You peaked over the security guard, yelling out his name.
“Oh my god.” Robby replied back looking at you.
Jack immediately rushed over to the security guard. “Woah woah woah please let her through.”
The security guard turned around. “Wait, is this your girl?”
“Yes she is.”
He looked tired. The skin around his face was red and blotchy from the heat and sweat of running around all night. His hair was tousled every which way. There was a small dot of blood on his scrubs that made your eyes widen. When he saw that, it clicked in his head that you’d been scared to come in. He grabbed your cheeks to force your face up to his.
“Hey,” he whispered. “It’s nothing.”
Your eyes darted to the trauma bay where everyone was still working. You could see the whites of a bone, blood all over everyone’s gloves.
“Hey hey hey look at me. He’s gonna be okay. It looks bad but I promise you it’s not. He’s gonna be okay.”
You brought your eyes back to him. You had to trust that the man was going to be okay. That the blood stain on his shirt was okay. That Jack was okay. That he loved this place, even if it made him see things and relive things he doesn’t want to. That he was happy.
The rest of the crew looked at your both standing there, shocked that you were real. The rumors, the whispers, the constant teasing all came to this moment where Jack took your hand and walked you to the nurses station.
“My beautiful, amazing, very sexy girlfriend made us food!” He yelled out.
You set down the trays of food. “Okay muffins, breakfast sandwiches, those are potatoes, also fruit? I don’t know if you guys eat that but it’s there.”
Jack took a muffin and bit into it, rolling his eyes of the sweet relief of some sort of food in his mouth. “You did all of this?”
“Yup! I couldn’t sleep so I just…cooked I guess?”
He pulled you in, his hands trailing on your waist. Your cheeks burned at his touch, but also at the fact that he was doing this in front of his coworkers. “You got all dressed up for me?” His voice was a little raspy, cooing as he tucked a strand of hair behind your ears.
“Yes I did.” You batted your eyelashes, trying to coax him to see what he’d do next.
“Yeah?” His voice dropped to that familiar tone. He smiled, biting his lip as he looked directly at your lips. While you had hoped he’d give you a big wet kiss, you settled for several small pecks that still sparked some commotion from his colleagues.
“Alright crazy kids knock it off.” Robby emerged from behind you. He took a breakfast sandwich and bit into it. Nodding his head in approval.
“This is really good,” he said “But I can’t have any more distractions in my ER. You’re a lovely girl but show and tell is over Jack.”
A couple of the staff rolled their eyes taking food with them as they got back to work. Jack looked at Robby with a smirk.
“Don’t be jealous. I have a woman that loves me and you’re all alone.” He teased.
“Aha don’t- don’t piss me off Abbot.” Robby starts walking away. Without thinking Jack scoops you up, hoists you over his shoulder and starts to walk out.
“I’m done for the day, don’t call me. My girlfriend says so.”
You laughed, blowing a kiss to everyone as he walks out into the parking lot, puts you back down, and devours you in kisses and gropes up against your car.
