Prefect Ron

One of the things that I almost never see Ron fans complain about as much as I think they could is the whole Prefect subplot that he has in OoTP. Cause pretty much, when Prefect letters come out before the start of the school year, legit EVERYONE is shocked when Ron gets the badge instead of Harry. It’s honestly a really interesting scene character-wise because NO ONE comes out of the situation looking good. The twins literally say the words “we thought that it would’ve been Harry,” and Molly takes a full page before she’s even able to comprehend that Ron has actually been singled out for having done something good. Even Hermione, who had been ecstatic when she thought that it was Harry who had got the letter, then has to do a bunch of backtracking and stuttering when she realizes that no, her fellow Gryffindor Prefect will in fact be Ron. It’s a really telling moment for Harry’s character as well, since it’s pretty much the only time when he gets a taste of Ron’s side of things. He’s jealous of his best friend for essentially the first time ever, and really struggles with how he feels about Ron “besting” him. 

It’s honestly one of my favorite moments in the whole series, not only because it features something good happening for Ron, (not to mention that this is one of the only occasions outside of Philosopher’s Stone where Dumbledore formally acknowledges Ron’s badass-ery), but because it makes clear that there are other measures of bravery besides just *being Harry Potter*, a fact which can sometimes get a little lost in the kerfuffle of everything.

But then at the end of OoTP, R*wling just goes LMAO FUCK ALL OF THAT DEEP INTROSPECTION AND MEANING, because it turns out that in actuality, the only reason that Ron was made a Prefect was because Dumbledore thought that Harry “had enough on his plate already” and didn’t want to give him any more pressure. So Harry really was the worthier Gryffindor all along and had no reason to be jealous because obviously Ron is stupid and incompetent and can never once be better in anything.

Um…Excuse me, Joanne? WHY DID YOU RUIN THAT ABSOLUTELY PERFECT SCENE WITH SOME HALF-ASSED BULLSHIT????????

Ron Weasley deserved better.

like my god, i get the idea that hes anti-slytherin or whatever, but some ppl just morph him into smth entirely different

i want a ron au where at first hes like “oh..” when harry is in slytherin but he later gets over that and hnderstands that ur house doesnt define you as a person.

i want that gryffindor + slytherin friendship that confuses everyone else. sure harry will def get slack for befriending a gryffindor, a WEASLEY especially. and ron will get slack for befriending a sleazy slytherin. but who cares? theyre friends.

I was reading one of the metas about Dumbledore saying in The King's Cross chapters that he relied on Hermione to slow Harry down regarding the Deathly Hallows, and I can't help but agree that Ron was missing in the line. It should have been relied on Hermione and Ron to slow Harry down, because I have a feeling that Hermione can't fully rein Harry in, and she would need Ron's help to do so. I would like your thoughts on this.

Honestly the whole "oh Harry you brave brave man" was already pretty annoying to me who is completely frigid to Harry's character but okay, why not, he's the hero and protagonist, we absolutely need him to be flooded in compliments so we know what to praise him for.

Of course JKR couldn't resist having her actual author's mouthpiece compliment her literal self-insert. When you realize this is JKR throwing herself flowers you just... lose any appreciation for that scene.

How could he remain angry with Dumbledore now? ‘Why did you have to make it so difficult?’ Dumbledore’s smile was tremulous. ‘I am afraid I counted on Miss Granger to slow you up, Harry. I was scared that, if presented outright with the facts about those tempting objects, you might seize the Hallows as I did, at the wrong time, for the wrong reasons. If you laid hands on them, I wanted you to possess them safely. You are the true master of death, because the true master does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that he must die, and understands that there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying.’ - Deathly Hallows

(also notice how Rowling makes such a big deal about how there are things so much worse than death, but she's ok with Harry torturing someone while going through ridiculous loops to ensure Harry never has to actually kill Voldemort. Because killing a murderous maniac in self-defense is worse than literal torture according to Rowling. Thanks for this lesson in morality... I guess???)

Yeah... it wasn't Hermione's saintly good heart and patience that got Harry to stop being an idiot. It was Dobby.

More specifically, Dobby dying.

If every time I was obsessed with something it took someone dying to snap out of it I'd have the police on my ass.

But, of course - we ABSOLUTELY had to wedge one compliment to Hermione in Dumbledore's last appearance. I mean, poor Hermione, that's a whole chapter without her being told she's clever/smart/astute, can you imagine? Our readers could forget she's supposed to be smart if they're not constantly being beaten over the head with it!!

One my favorite headcanons for Ron Weasley is that he grows up to be an excellent homemaker. He doesn't realize it, it just sorta hits him one day.

As a teen, he didn't particularly like chores and there was always someone to pick up after him. (Molly, the house elves at hogwarts) He wasn't a slob just a bit messy and disorganized. It was small things like forgetting to make the bed, leaving a dirty dish or two just waiting for someone to pick it up, the stray piece of clothing here or there.

The build up was an amalgamation of hobbies and spur of the moment choices. When Fred died he tried to help pick up the slack in the household when everyone else was too tired to. He complained less about doing chores even going as far as volunteering to do small ones.

One day when he woke up early cause of a nightmare he thought he would try cooking. He was the only one awake for now, but no doubt his mother would be up soon to start making breakfast. Why not surprise her. Casting a quick silencio so he doesn't wake anyone up, he started making his first "meal." In the end, he ended up with a blob of overcooked eggs (he decided to just plop them all at once) and slightly burnt bacon. (after a round of ones that were burnt to a crisp) Molly was rightfully angry that he cooked by himself with no supervision FOR THE FIRST TIME SHE COULD SMELL THE BURNT FOOD IN THE AIR but appreciative nontheless.

This started the saga of Ron being Molly's go to when she need help in the kitchen. Slowly it went from simple breakfasts, to more complicated dishes, to baking, to how to pick out the best ingredients, to growing them and making ingredients from scratch.

A series of unfortunate events in the Ron learning to do chores later (all the way from cleaning to fixing household objects) Ron was actually getting quite good at it and has only gotten better over time.

He still tended to be messy and he could never seem to get the hang of "clean as you go" preferring to do the chores in one go or as needed instead of little by little so they don't pile up, but it works for him.

✨We are super excited that Dronarry Fest 2023 will be kicking off in just a few short weeks! ✨

Here are the rules and guidelines and (hopefully!) everything you need to know about taking part in the fest.

Dronarry Fest is a fic and art fest specifically dedicated to the characters of Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter, either as a triad (Dronarry) or as pairs (Drarry, Dron, Ronarry). All works must feature all three characters in significant capacity either as romantic interests or in a platonic dynamic of some description.

You do not have to be creating in the fest to send in a prompt.

Collaborations are welcome! Please only submit one form per collaboration work and include details of all participants. Collabs can be illustrated fics, multi-author fics, multi-artists artworks, etc.

If you wish to create based on an existing fanwork, please submit as a self-prompt. You must ask for the original creator’s permission before submitting. We will trust you to honour this and only ask for proof in case issues arise. As proof we would expect written consent, or a blanket permission statement from the original creator either as a link or screencap.

Creating

All creations must feature either: Dronarry (Draco/Ron/Harry), Drarry (Draco/Harry), Dron (Draco/Ron), or Ronarry (Ron/Harry), or a mixture of the listed ships.

All creations must feature Draco, Ron, and Harry as main characters.

Minimum of 1k for fics, with no maximum wordcount. For podfics, the recorded story should be a minimum of 1k words, no maximum.

All fics must be proofread by a beta. Podfics must be proofed before submission. If you do not have a beta, please contact the mods ([email protected]) or send us an ask and we can put a call out for a beta for you.

This is an anonymous fest. Please do not discuss your creations with anyone except for your beta readers and the fest mods until the reveals have been announced.

Submissions must be complete works created for Dronarry Fest. Please do not submit incomplete works or works that are part of a series or a prequel/sequel to an existing work, unless it is a remix.

We encourage you to be inspired by prompts’ additional details, but it is not a requirement to incorporate them into your creation. You are not required to abide by any mentioned dislikes. However, if you plan to gift a creation to the prompter, we may disallow this if you ignore stated dislikes. Please tag your work appropriately.

All works must be submitted to the AO3 collection: Dronarry Fest 2023. If you do not have an AO3 account, please contact the mods.

You are required to add dronarry_mods as a co-creator when uploading your creation. This is so that we can change the posting date, check the submission, and add a tag for Dronarry Fest 2023. We will not make any other changes to your work, and we will remove the mod account immediately after the fest has ended. 

Major archive warnings and other seriously triggering and harmful content must be tagged (racism and racially sensitive content, transphobia, homophobia, xenophobia, etc - here is a very helpful list of warning tags from the Trigger Warnings blog).

Upon submitting your content, you agree to the Rules and Guidelines of the fest.

FAQs

Are other ships allowed? Theoretically, yes, but they must be minor. Dronarry, Drarry, Dron and/or Ronarry must be the main pairing and focus of your work. You can pair Draco, Ron, and/or Harry with other characters, but these must be background relationships and the story must be centred around one or more of the ships listed above.

Is this an 18+ fest? Yes, this fest is only open to creators over the age of 18 at time of submission (February 19th 2023).

Ron is the first to realize they’re in love. That he’s in love with both of them.

It’s a normal day, the three of them in the library. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Harry had said something that made Hermione laugh.

And Ron? Ron can’t help but to stare. Stare at the crinkles around her beautiful brown eyes. Stare at her curled that bounce and shake with her laughter. His chest hurts when he looks at her, it hurts with an ache that he for some reason enjoys. It feels a bit like he might drown from the overwhelming amount of love and fondness he feels for her.

It makes sense, he thinks. Everything and everyone always said one of them would end up with her. It was how the world worked. And really, who wouldn’t love Hermione? She was the most brilliant person he’d ever known.

He glanced towards Harry and felt his chest tighten when he saw the fond look on the smaller boys face.

Green eyes that held such a softness that Ron ached to see them directed at him. A small little smile that made something warm and soft form in his stomach. Glasses that were slipping just slightly too far down a nose in such a familiar way that a bubble of fond exasperation exploded in his chest.

Later that night he would lay in bed, painfully aware of the familiar breathing only a few feet away from him.

No one had warned him about this.

Everyone always said one of them would end up with Hermione. He knew it was always believed that he would and Harry would end up with Ginny.

The idea has always upset him before, how everyone had these roles they wanted the three of them to fit into. How his baby sister was being sucked into it too.

Maybe he should feel disgusted with himself. Terrible that he was being so selfish. But the realization felt like coming home, as if, of course this would be the next step. Of course he wanted to spend the rest of his life with both of his best friends. Of course his future would forever be intertwined with theirs.

He’s in love with Hermione Granger, a fact that no one would be surprised about. But he’s also in love with Harry Potter, something no one would have expected.

And maybe people will expect him to choose but Ron can’t bring himself to do that. It only makes sense that he’d love them both equally.
