Intro Post

Hey all, I'm Rook O' Nines, formerly mythiclover. I've been a lurker on Tumblr for a couple of years now, but I recently started becoming more active on my new side blog, @arthur-lesters-music-stand/@arthur-lesters-amusia. That said, if you ever followed me for fandom stuff, especially The Magnus Archives or Malevolent, I recommend checking out the side blogs. I also do Malevolent roleplays as @thesweetestnyarlathotep and @the-scribe-of-carcosa. This blog will largely remain for reblogging misc. things I find interesting. I might undergo a rebrand soon, as I feel I've outgrown the name and whatnot. I'll keep you posted on whatever happens!

The qiflings need to use their status as grand apprentices to get what they want. One of them just needs to drop “grandmaster Bel” or in really desperate times, “grandpa Bel”, and they are going to get everything they want and more.

“Grandmaster Bel, could you teach me lightning magic?” - Instant yes. Who cares if Qifrey said they’re too young?

“Grandmaster Bel? I was wondering, could you ask the cafeteria to serve that soup from last week again? It was really good.” - that soup is getting served every week. He couldn’t care less if people get sick of it.

“Grandpa Bel, can I decorate your chair with ribbons?” -Of course! Put all the ribbons you want.

“Grandpa Bel, we all got grounded by Master Qifrey and Master Olruggio for running off and getting ourselves in danger. Sorry we can’t visit you.” - time for Beldaruit to flex his title and formally request them in the Great Hall

“Grandpa Bell, could you make Mr. Easthies go away? He’s scary.” - immediately calls Vinanna “you tell your apprentice to leave those poor children alone. He’s terrorizing my grandchildren for no reason.”

Their birthday and holiday presents are just trunks of dresses and magic tools and books. Rare casting agents, fancy sweets, and the newest tomes are sent to them regardless of Qifrey’s complaints of “you’re spoiling them”.

The children now get “allowances for their hard work” but it’s really just bags of money every time they visit.

i know in the translation from manga to anime, a lot of things get cut or moved around-- and I understand why-- but i really wish they would've kept Tetia's initial... discomfort w/ Coco -> she was NOT rocking w/ this girl for any reason; she did not want to be around her, or help her, or really even be alone w/ her

it's sorta blink and you'll miss it, and especially overshadowed by the worry she displays over Agott's stunt, but Tetia gives Coco very short answers or hesitant ones when it's just the two of them-- it's very obvious she wants to get away -> she's never outright rude, or hostile, like Agott is-- or outright avoidant, like Richeh is-- but her normal warmth only really peeks through in group settings. At least, until after the dragon

mind you, the emphasis on the seven flowers being a secret third thing where originating from living beings (and not objects created for a purpose) gives them a higher capacity of self determination than other darkners and the meta ability to fuck with the game mechanics has not been lost on me after the MULTIPLE instances, in both Undertale and Deltarune, of characters going Huh... sunsets as a major theme in chap 5 because undertale ends on a sunset. susie and noelle walk into the sunset together, happy. this is where the story is supposed to end. ralsei left a piece of pie on the floor of susie's bedroom because this is where the story ends. we're all friends and we're in the places we're supposed to be. but after the sunset darkness always falls. I feel like it's ever so slightly underdiscussed in the fandom that, unlike standard Darkners, the 7 flowers' Dark World forms aren't a result of their histories being personified; they're deliberately constructed personas. One of the ways in which they're "breaking the rules" is by bucking the "No one can choose who they are in this world." sentiment.

Hell, the fact that they take on human forms (well, to varying degrees of success) also plays a part in their rule breaking. Since, at least from our perspective, there has always seemed to be unspoken rules about the depiction of humans in UTDR, or the lack thereof even. Something you often see brought up about Ch 5 is how surreal it is to see more "human" characters in the game! On top of it, there's definitely some intentionality to the fact that each of them are stylized differently; the broader rules of UTDR human character design are mysterious even to them.

In Flowery's case specifically he might even have enough awareness about things that he vaguely understands the way in which humans are supposed to be "special" and is committing a deliberate faux pas by taking the form of one. This naturally clashes against Ralsei, especially since this chapter was gesturing at the idea that they might be taking on a monster form to be more... palatable, I think? Rather than out of any personal preference.
