it finally happened!! this is the reading sideblog for @flicker-sys, a place where i can put... probably a bit of a jumble of different things? live reactions as i read, analysis/thoughts, random fanart i find, you name it!!

current favourite book series is Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend, so there'll probably be a lot of that

wow rereading the constellations series by claudia gray really does hit different in this day and age huh

for context, for those of you who haven't read the series!! (spoiler warning for the series from this point onward) the series centres around the relationship between a human (noemi) and a robot (abel). the robot in question is the most sophisticated ai ever created, to the point where he can completely pass for human to the untrained eye. however, as the series progresses we see his internal processing and perception of reality change to the point where it becomes obvious he's evolved to have an actual soul, not just an emulation of one.

now this book series was written in 2017, WAY before the rise of generative ai!! so the idea of a robot evolving to the point where he has an actual soul and is almost-but-not-quite a human wasn't quite as scary as it is now. however if you apply the same principles to modern ai that are applied to abel in the books, it actually seems sort of scary - if i were talking to what i assumed to be a robot, and it was talking to me with almost the same tone and mannerisms as an actual human, i would probably throw my phone across the room because that would horrify me.

in the book we're told that the reason abel is as intelligent as he is is because he's programmed with basically all the knowledge in the world. now what does that sound like?? gen ai is able to simulate consciousness because it has access to pretty much the whole of the internet and can string together the most likely set of words to solve whatever problem you present it with. i think the only reason i actually enjoy reading abel as a character is because we get to see his perspective and get to see his exact thought processes and the way he speaks to noemi evolving, and it shows that he is genuinely conscious and not just a very good LLM. i do think the book really did have the potential to be creepy as hell by mistake simply through the uncanny valley effect, so i'm very glad claudia gray managed to balance the robot/human aspects of abel perfectly!!

anyway i'm gonna end this post now i think. there was no real point to this lmao i just wanted to ramble about my second-favourite book series and i'm always vaguely thinking about gen ai (because it's fucking EVERYWHERE get it away from me) so reading the books is very interesting this time around!! last time i read them gen ai wasn't anywhere near as prevalent in society so it's fascinating to me how differently abel as a character reads now that generative ai is A Thing and i wanted to actually properly compare the two

THIS IS A RECOMMENDATION POST FOR THIS BOOK SERIES BTW!! it's SUCH an incredible series it takes apart what it means to be human (to the point where it inspired me to write a musical about the topic) and also a really interesting look at religion/faith and duty and how the two intersect. both the main characters are so well written and they're fascinating and i love them so so much. everyone go read this series NOW the first book is called defy the stars and it's written by claudia gray

just started project hail mary after watching the film a while ago and it is cracking me up that in the film grace just looks out the window and sees space and that's how he finds out

and then in the book he goes hmmmm every time objects fall on me they do it Wrong. let me get my stopwatch and my subconsciously ingrained physics formulae. so when i drop this test tube on the ground 20 times it averages out at 0.348 seconds fall time. *complicated formulae that i can't remember the symbols for* ohh NO the GRAVITY is TOO HIGH. i am not on earth. holy SHIT i must be in space oh no

thinking about my gcse science teachers. specifically my biology teacher. and it's like holy shit i could have had someone like dr ryland grace?? they exist?? but no instead i had to teach myself the whole sodding exam paper because she didn't care enough to make sure we'd actually retained any information from her lessons. i wish she'd played beanbag games with us that would have been unbelievably fun >:(

sighhh as fun as musical theatre is i would love a job where i was given a thing to just collect data from and unlimited equipment and any time i had a question i could just sit down and spend however long i wanted figuring out an answer. being a really well-equipped scientist sounds like such an awesome way to live life i wish i could do that

just got to the bit where grace is remembering stratt telling him about the russian isolation experiments and it made me so sad because i only got through learning about lord of the flies in secondary school knowing that it genuinely doesn't make sense and that it isn't how humanity works. and then stratt says "mm no. fuck you and your beliefs of humanity's inherent good 👍" so i googled it, and it turns out andy weir is talking about a real study (if you want to know more about it, google the mars-500 experiments!!) but he made up the bit about them all becoming violent and trying to kill each other!! they all emerged as very close friends with no interpersonal conflict recorded :D i was right no one should ever doubt me

ohhhh reading this book having already watched the movie is the worst experience known to man the whole time after grace and rocky parted ways i just sat there wondering when he was going to figure out that rocky was stranded. horrible experience 0/10 i wanted to experience hope and joy

thinking about my gcse science teachers. specifically my biology teacher. and it's like holy shit i could have had someone like dr ryland grace?? they exist?? but no instead i had to teach myself the whole sodding exam paper because she didn't care enough to make sure we'd actually retained any information from her lessons. i wish she'd played beanbag games with us that would have been unbelievably fun >:(

sighhh as fun as musical theatre is i would love a job where i was given a thing to just collect data from and unlimited equipment and any time i had a question i could just sit down and spend however long i wanted figuring out an answer. being a really well-equipped scientist sounds like such an awesome way to live life i wish i could do that

just got to the bit where grace is remembering stratt telling him about the russian isolation experiments and it made me so sad because i only got through learning about lord of the flies in secondary school knowing that it genuinely doesn't make sense and that it isn't how humanity works. and then stratt says "mm no. fuck you and your beliefs of humanity's inherent good 👍" so i googled it, and it turns out andy weir is talking about a real study (if you want to know more about it, google the mars-500 experiments!!) but he made up the bit about them all becoming violent and trying to kill each other!! they all emerged as very close friends with no interpersonal conflict recorded :D i was right no one should ever doubt me
