I really don't mean to sound mean, but *please* don't use generative ai. It's theft, pure and simple. It's spitting in the face of all writers and artists. It should have no place in this community. I've looked up to you and followed you for several years now, and you were one of the first whump blogs I followed. I beg of you, do some research into how horrible gen AI stuff is and don't use it.

I completely understand where you are coming from… however I have a question. Is me using AI purely for my own private entertainment with no intention of ever sharing what is generated, wrong or theft?

Regardless, I removed the post but I’m interested in your thoughts on the subject.

Not the anon, but I have thoughts, so.

A lot of the discourse around AI focuses on individual choice and use of Chat GPT, which makes sense because fandom always tends to focus on individual consumption — by engaging with X you're choosing to associate yourself with it, etc.

But systemic and institutional problems are way more complex than that. The problem with generative AI isn't that every person who uses it is stealing, it's that the technology itself only exists through theft, as the makers scraped the internet and downloaded everything on LibGen to teach it to speak like a human. The problem with generative AI isn't that your request personally wasted a bottle of water, it's that this is an industry that pollutes massively, uses an inordinate amount of water and electricity, and is currently putting people out of work — but is completely and utterly unnecessary and largely unwanted, and is only achieving the apparent success it's currently managing because it's being foisted on pretty much everyone.

I don't look at any one person using the service and think, "well, you're a bad person for typing in a prompt and hitting a button." I think, "this is a technology that should not exist, and none of us should be interacting with it at all so that we can collectively help force it to be shut down." At the same time, it's going to take more than simple non-use for this thing to be destroyed. So for me, it's more just disappointing when other people use it, especially other people who are themselves creative. Nobody needs it.

and. using these technologies privately encourages companies to see them as popular and viable and use them even more, in ways that have a hell of a lot more impact than one person generating a big titty anime girl or whatever
