Blue-glazed pomegranate vase, Porcelain (Yongzheng period, 1723-1735) Chinese imperial porcelain vase resembling a ripe pomegranate, with a deep, rich blue glaze. The top mimics the crown-like fruit's open skin.

In Chinese culture, the pomegranate served as a traditional symbol of prosperity and a happy family due to its many hidden seeds. Imperial workshops produced these monochrome vessels in limited numbers for the wealthy elite. Loc. Private Collection. Dim. 18 cm H (7 1/8 in.).

First off: high-cotton 19th century French for “talk about a hot night” 😉

(Oh look, crépuscule must be the root of the word crepuscular, describing an animal that is most active at dusk & dawn, neat)

And second: that made me curious about the series (?) this painting was included in, “Le Poison Des Pierreries.” In spite of some distant French ancestry I know next to nothing about the language, but it seems to translate to “The Poison of Jewels.” I wonder about the meaning there. Is it a “rich girls are toxic” idea? “Being wealthy kills your soul?” I’m teaching Hamlet right now and all I can think of is Claudius putting the “union” into Hamlet’s drink at the fencing match: poison disguised as a pearl to be dissolved in wine, an act of royal conspicuous consumption as well as an act to end his brother’s line.

Apparently I need to research this series of paintings!!!
