i think bloom into you is a fantastic story when it comes to aro/ace stuff, and it's crazy to me that anyone would say otherwise, just because yuu herself isn't the same as the aroace side character maki. those two characters are put next to each other specifically to showcase the differences between them. but like, is it really more important to just go "yup this character is the aro/ace representation" than having a complex character questioning romance, and discovering the different ways you can experience love? yuu was confused about what romantic love really is, and what it feels like, because she could never relate to the way it was portrayed in media. even real world romantic experiences of her friend were confusing. she wanted to fall in love but seemed to be unable to. and here's the thing: in the end she does experience romantic and sexual attraction, but she got there by understanding that she doesn't fall in love the way she imagined it has to happen. she discovered her own way of navigating romance, which is so compelling to me!

and it's not just about discovering that she's into girls, since i've seen ppl say that sometimes. in fact it doesn't seem to be such a big deal for her at all, she sorta just accepts that she simply loves who she loves, and it's touko who is also a girl. which is interesting actually! yuu's development is specifically focused on exploring what romantic love in general feels like to her, and how she experiences falling in love rather than what gender she's into. like yuu being in a wlw relationship is still portrayed in realistic way, worrying how it'll be perceived by her family, but it just kinda comes after the fact that they're together yknow?

so why is her emotional journey suddenly deemed unimportant just because she doesn't fit that specific box some ppl wanted her to be in. maybe this is the problem i have with this whole representation talk sometimes... when it feels like ppl don't look at characters as individuals who portray a very specific experience unique to them, but more as the fabled "representation" pieces that have to be perfect and somehow do the impossible task of portraying the entire group in just one person. this is a general problem with judging queer rep i think.

look i understand that we don't have a lot of aro/ace rep in general. perhaps it's just me, but i really find it more meaningful to even just have non-aroace characters expressing some aroace coded sentiments and questioning things, rather than viewers always demanding that very clear and strict aroace rep. cuz literally everyone is allowed to do that, explore their identity even if they end up not identifying with certain labels. i think it's very good to have various characters questioning the way romantic and sexual attraction works and feels for them, instead of only limiting it to those like... "designated" aro/ace characters, which creates this rlly strange feeling of isolation and othering imo. but going back to yuu, i think she can easily be interpreted as somewhere on the spectrum and she's such an interesting and relatable character, just not strictly aroace. which is okay

I just love how Supergirl isn't really about the revenge or the dog or anything that goes on at all. Its about two grieving girls trying to keep going in diffrent ways and teaching each other how to survive with the weight of it all while also inspiring each other to be better people. Its about not letting your past overtake your future. Its about prioritizing yourself instead of being fuled by your trauma. Its about being good no matter what.

So we've been having a bit of a debate in the office because we wanted to do the headline "Local man gives up sugar for 12 minutes" but then overdoing the "local man" trope is a bit male-centric, so we considered "Local woman" but then that sounds like we're typecasting women so that wasn't great either, but I think we've finally found a worthy compromise:

Of course they don’t like Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. She’s a grown ass woman with zero love interests who spends the movie saving her dog, casually dismantling a sex trafficking ring while she’s at it, and preaching the importance of being good, not nice or smiley or cheerful but good. I for one adored the movie and I really hope I’ll get to see more of Alcock’s Supergirl she’s now my favorite iteration of her and I love her so dearly.
