reading rain world reviews from around 2017 is always such a trip, they're like "it shines during moments that encourage improvisation", "you’re a foreigner in a ruined land", "It’s refreshingly hands-off" to which i go ye that sounds fucking awesome!! then they give it 5/10

"having to forage and hibernate to pass a gate feels disrespectful of player’s time since there are no rewards for killing and eating" yeah it must be so tragic to have to engage with core mechanic to progress. you're right, eating food should give u 1000 xp and a gun in this animalistic survival game

it kinda boils down to "visuals pretty, ecosystem cool, but game too unfair and difficult" without rlly understanding that this is why it's so unique. you can't have a tense survival experience in a living game ecosystem if you don't acknowledge the brutality and unfairness of nature. you're not here to have a nice, comfortable stroll in the park, you're here to learn all over again how to walk, and then survive, as a little slimy slugcat in a big dangerous world
