Writing this here as a reminder to my own damn self: if the thing they make fun of me for is caring too much, I’m okay. I don’t need to shame myself. I do care too much. I do think it hurts me at times and could use a dial back. But it’s not nearly as embarrassing as my brain thinks it is.
Superman showed Masculinity doesn’t need to be violent to be protective. And Supergirl showed us Femininity doesn’t need to be nice or submissive to be kind. But one is praised and the other is getting shat on.

So I grew up learning about Climate Change and ways to reduce it and mourning the burning of libraries and lost knowledge and history with every fascist movement. And at 30, I have to watch as every billionaire on earth is investing in fucking AI speeding up Climate Change, depleting water sources and buying rare books in bulk to train AI on them and destroy them, not even digitalise them which is already seen as less durable than physical copies, just train AI on them with their own biased algorithms and then destroy them. And I can’t do anything. And I just have to go with my day.
Your character doesn't need to be likeable. They need to be legible. The reader needs to understand every decision they make even when it's wrong, even when it's ugly, even when they want to shake them. Likeable is easy and forgettable. Legible is what makes someone stay with you for years. Make the logic of every bad choice visible. The reader doesn't have to agree with it. They just have to follow it.
