a pile of books teeters dangerously in noraโs hands: steadily growing despite her promises of no more. and donโt worry, sheโll have them all read and returned by next week. nora wouldnโt dare overdraw her library card (think of the horror). she studies the spines like an artist in a gallery, daring to risk her wrists with the weight of just one more book. hand outstretched, she pauses to startle: a sudden squeak disrupting the silence and drawing her gaze. blue eyes meet green. nora blinks. once, then twice. she feels suddenly as if she might be sick. she abandons not one, but all of her books: shoving them clumsily and uncharacteristically back onto shelves they didnโt fit. sheโll feel bad about that, later. for now, all nora can do is scramble: out, away, not this. god, anything but this.
but rose is quicker. before the brunette can find her good sense (or an exit, for that matter), the woman appears in front of her: five years between them and no goodbyes. she calls her by a name that belongs to another lifetime. another girl.ย โโ oh,โ is all she musters. legs lock in place, blinking dumbly another once or twice.ย โiโm sorry.โ noraโs voice makes its reappearance: formal and strange. what does she apologise for? who knows, call it habit. perhaps itโs for what sheโs about to do: turn tail and run. and she does exactly that. well, maybe not run โ itโs a library, after all, and sheโs nora. but itโs certainly a brisk walk.
ย ย the one who shouldnโt be sorry,ย is.ย ย as for rose?ย iย ๐๐๐๐๐
ย tell you what she feels.ย but isnโt it just manipulation when thereโs nothingย done about it?ย ย she assumes too much out of this.ย taking what she wants is a practiced art;ย these days sheโs the maestro.ย overfed and malnourished.ย such as now.ย when nora's trying flight;ย free and beautiful,ย rose is a falconโs tragic anklet.ย ย just as diligent.ย and as cruel.ย ย what iโm telling you is her arm reaches out,ย latching around noraโs wrist.ย ย
ย ย ย ย โ ----ย wait,ย ย hey,ย nora,ย โย ย it canโt be stern.ย thatโs an intonation too far.ย itโs predecessor is called demanding.ย and that is as she sounds.ย some sprinkle of a plead,ย too,ย but you know which is louder.ย ย ( both are too much for this library )
ย ย ย rose lets go once theyโre adjacent.ย green exact brown.ย up close she sees it:ย astonishingly,ย cheeks are pinkerย than remembered.ย lips as full.ย in a way,ย five years has settled her into her looks,ย although sheโs always been pretty.
when nora tries her left,ย rose tries her right.ย it isnโt right to trap someone in,ย is it?
ย ย ย ย โย ย donโt---- ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ on me.ย ย i just want to talk.ย โย ย ย
