AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.

Here are the important details:

We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner. 

We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.

To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.

This should be opt in, not opt out. The fact that you've made it opt out, and that you can't even do it on mobile, just shows how actively invested you are in this. You actively want people to have their original content scraped, so that you can use this data to convince more AI platforms to invest in you and keep scraping deeper. This is the end goal, not an unfortunate side effect.

How the fuck does this work if I post something original and have third party sharing turned off, and then someone has the audacity to do exactly what this hellsite is designed for and reblogs it, but they haven't turned that setting off yet? I'm guessing my content still gets scraped?

Fuck off. Just fuck all the way off into the sun, and then keep fucking off into deep space. No one here wants to be complicit in furthering the vast swathes of godforsaken AI swamps, full of festering, plagiarised garbage. 'We're totally against AI scraping, except for the companies who pay us!' is a fucking cowardly, duplicitous take. Don't pretend that this is a moral stance. It's not. It's about profit. And sure, you need to make profit, but any plan to do it at the expense of your users can absolutely piss off into the sewers. There's no site without us. You need us more than we need you.

They are already selling data to midjourney, and it's very likely your work is already being used to train their models because you have to OPT OUT of this, not opt in. Very scummy of them to roll this out unannounced.

login in on desktop, it's not available on mobile yet

click "Account"

click on your blog

go to "Blog Settings"

go to "Visibility"

Scroll down to the bottom option

turn the toggle ON, not off

you will have to do this individually for each sideblog you have too, no way to do it for each account in one go

I've seen a lot of people with tags like this, and that is wonderful! Please do what you can. If you cannot do everything, that is completely fine! Some people are not able to call off of work or get out of school. Some people can't stop buying things, and that's all ok.

Here's what you can do, if you're able:

Don't make unnecessary purchases (only buy necessities like groceries, medicine, and sanitary needs)

Buy with cash where you can

2024 is the year i start converting my lawn to clover. our lawn is too damb BIG and it's a pain to mow the slopey bits. i hate grass, grass is stupid and useless, clover is pretty and makes bees happy.

i also want to get some blue violets in there. the lawn at the previous place we lived had violets all along the back and it made me so happy. i want that for my house now.
