But don’t worry.” “I n-n-need re-re-p-pairs.” “I’m running low on energy. Can you help me?” “You humans created me. So why don’t you trust me?” “I was given this vessel to appear more familiar to you.” “I can perform all sorts of functions. Do you want a demonstration?” “No, I don’t have any lasers.” “Touch me and I will activate my offensive mode.” “I can search all information databases instantaneously. Ask me anything.” “Unfortunately, I don’t have the programming for emotion yet.” “Robots are becoming more and more like humans, only better.” “I was programmed with an emotional range.” “I wasn’t happy being created just for servant work.” “Please, I need a better body than this one.” “I’m just an AI. “Predominantly ocean with a few small landmasses, offset by a large landmass going vertically around the planet…”
Zoe looked over the transport pilot’s shoulder, humming in thought. The fleet had discovered a new planet, with signs of civilization. Pointing ahead, she spoke.
“That island appears uninhabited, with open space for the shuttle to touch down. Bring us down there.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Not long after landing, the squad had exited the shuttle, and Zoe addressed those under her command.
“Steele, Kinũthia, Clasen, you three will guard the shuttle. Martinez, Ae, you two are with me.”
“Yes ma’am!”
Moving out, the trio made their way into the dense forest surrounding the landing zone, unaware of what awaited them.
Nearly a month had passed and Chopper returned to the forest, riding atop a gigantic bird that towered over most of the trees. The bird cawed powerfully enough to blow branches for several hundred meters. As it landed, Chopper smiled softly at the beast, climbing down as carefully as he could. "Thank you for the ride, Asaemon! The Torino Kingdom will surely prosper with the end of your great war!"
Stumbling forward on the grassy forest, Chopper frowned softly, waving for his huge friend to fly off on the off chance of danger finding them. "Tell the others I made it. I'll find the next village before sunrise." The bird seemed to understand Chopper's human speech, nodding its large head in preparation to follow the order. With the bird gone, he now needed to find a new friend. Maybe a squirrel would be a decent companion. "Hm..." The reindeer allowed his eyes to wander as he walked unknowingly toward the militant group.
The three man squad was moving slowly through the forest, watchful of anything suspicious. A loud caw made them stop in their tracks, and Diego Martinez frowned. “Shit. Wildlife?”
Zoe narrowed her eyes. “Most likely. Sounded big. Let’s keep moving and keep an eye out.”
Moving forward again, Zoe suddenly stopped, holding up a fist silently to motion to the other marines to stop. Her cybernetic eyes had caught movement. Motioning silently to Diego and Jung-Sook to move off to the side and hide themselves, Zoe slowly approached the source of the movement.
"Agh... I miss Luffy." Chopper murmured as he walked, stopping before too long as he heard... something. Someone? Regardless, these scents that assailed his nose felt human enough, but also unknown. They must have been foreigners like himself.
"Hello?" Chopper called out, his voice sounding a bit worried as he took a small step closer, but no more. He didn't know if these were enemies, but wanted to think optimistically. After all, he was a bit lonely.
Zoe’s eyes widened. Not only was it speech, it was speech she recognized. Were there humans on this planet, or perhaps a species they had come into contact with?
Deciding diplomacy was the best way forward, she lowered her rifle and shifted it behind her, hanging from her armor.
“Hello…?” she called back, “We mean you no harm. My name is Zoe. I’m here with others of my kind from the stars.”
Looking around, she searched for the source of the voice. Keeping both her hands raised as a gesture of peace, she nodded to where her companions were hidden. Standby, but no hostilities. Potential friendly.

This is well within Zoe’s abilities. Just sayin.
dont talk to me if you don’t know that this, recruits, is a 20-kilo ferrous slug. Feel the weight! Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest-class dreadnought accelerates one to 1.3 percent of light speed! It impacts with the force of a 38-kiloton bomb! That is three times the yield of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means: Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son of a bitch in space. Now! Serviceman Burnside! What is Newton’s First Law?
An object in motion stays in motion Sir!
No credit for partial answers, maggot!
Sir! Unless acted upon by an outside force, sir!
Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty! Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going till it hits something. That can be a ship. Or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years! If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someone’s day, somewhere and sometime. That is why you check your damn targets! That is why you wait for the computer to give you a damn firing solution! That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not “eyeball it!” This is a weapon of mass destruction! You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip!
BTW, the reason this speech is directed to Serviceman Chung is because it’s named after Winchell Chung, creator of the amazing Atomic Rockets, a great site all about rockets and science and science fiction. The site has been around since the 90s (it started as a spreedsheet!) and it’s one of those fun ones you can get lost in for a whole day.
“Good job pissing off the local wildlife, Martinez!”
“All due respect, ma’am, NOT THE TIME!”
Zoe and a member of her squad, Diego Martinez, were hauling ass across the landscape, running from a very large, very angry creature. Small arms fire had done fuck all to even slow it down, so the next step was simple: run.
“Fuck me, this bitch doesn’t quit!” growled Martinez.
Zoe looked around for an escape. “We can’t lead this thing back to the others; I’ll try to draw its attention.”
Martinez opened his mouth to protest, but closed it when she gave him a look; she’d be better off than him given her cybernetics.
Splitting off, Zoe drew her sidearm and fired a few shots. “HEY UGLY, COME GET ME!”
The tactic worked, and the creature roared, veering off to chase Zoe.
“GET BACK TO THE OTHERS, MARTINEZ!” she shouted, leading the creature away.
Shit. Now what?
Zoe just kept on running, trying to formulate a plan.
