“it’s tempting to assume” is academic speaking for “you might think, if you’re a fucking idiot,”
my favorite is when the thing that it’s tempting to assume is a widely held belief in the field that was established largely by one academic who is very famous but not correct? like very clearly wrong but no one who knows shit wants to say anything to his face because of the aforementioned fame and it’s only now that someone new has come along, usually some new kid on the scene looking to make a name for themselves, and absolutely demolishes that first guy’s assumptions in like 46 pages, 247 citations, 11pt font
