I’m so tired of the “why do people hate aspecs, they aren’t doing anything?” argument. I know that it is an attempt to support us, but it fails so spectacularly to understand aromanticism, asexuality, and any other aspec identity that it’s actively frustrating.
We are doing something. We’re rejecting allonormative ideals and that’s a massive thing to do. We’re actively fighting not just to help other aspecs, but to help everyone, because amatonormativity (and allonormativity as a whole) hurt everyone. Single people who want to find a partner but can’t also deserve to be able to exist.
There are so many issues with the expectation of marriage, including:
A single income isn't enough to get by anymore
Having a spouse is almost necessary under the current medical system
Society shames and pressures people who are single to get into relationships constantly
Rejecting allonormativity means fighting against these things that hurt everyone.
So, no, aces and aros and other aspecs aren't "doing nothing." We're doing quite a lot.

would it be crazy of me to say that i don't think will byers is a very well-written character in the sense that he wasn't done justice narratively or regarding his characters arcs, he was basically sidelined time and time again throughout the show, but i still think he was a very important character and the impact he's made should be acknowledged? and the truth is that most of that is completely thanks to noah schnapp for his portrayal of will and the fact that he put his heart and soul into every single performance and every scene, and also just the fact that he very clearly loved his character! as a gay man himself it's clear that he identified with will's struggles with self-acceptance and whatnot, and it shows! he did such an amazing job with bringing will byers to life and i personally will forever be grateful for that, because lord knows what this character could've been if he wasn't just written and directed but also played by a straight man who couldn't care less about the queer aspects of him. at the end of the day will byers was a meaningful character and he's done much good for my own queer journey and same goes for tons of other people, and knowing that warms my heart. i just wish the duffer brothers would've treated both noah and will better yk?

The thing about reading a really good book as a writer is that it does two things at once. it fills you up and it destroys you. you're reading going "yes. yes this is why. this is the whole reason." and also "i will never write a sentence this good. i should give up and become something reasonable like a geologist. geologists don't have to do this. geologists go outside and look at rocks and nobody asks them why the pacing is slow in the middle." i finish every great book both inspired and briefly geologist-curious.
