Espinfinie is so fucking funny to me. The entire ship stemmed from a theory that happened while the Chaotix Casefiles was coming out, and when the theory turned out to not be true, everyone just decided to ignore it because the theory made way more sense than what actually happened. Espio and Infinite don't even really interact at all in the actual Casefiles. I don't think they have a conversation with each other. But we all decided that no, Infinite was actually Rouge the whole time and was flirting with Espio (even though that didn't actually happen) and that Infinite is down sooo bad for that chameleon. He's so obsessed with Espio that he created an illusion of Rouge to flirt with him (fake and didn't happen) and Espio was oblivious to it because he's just immune to women flirting with him. And I think all of that is based as hell.

Infinite's mask is obviously a way to hide his face due to the shame he felt losing everything to Shadow. But also, considering how the Phantom Ruby works, the mask could also work to isolate him from the constant noise and fog it emits. Hearing that droning noise 24/7 would likely drive him insane (well, faster than having the Ruby fused to his body would). It's interesting to think of the mask as a sensory deprivation tool that keeps him separated from the real world while the Phantom Ruby drives him deeper into his escapist wish-fulfillment tendencies. A literal echo chamber strapped to his face.

there's some things about Infinite that people probably don't think about because it was toned down as result of the rating and tone

he's killed people and his squad probably killed people

I've seen people act like Shadow was "a big meanie" for taking out Infinite's squad but they were not innocent at all

also, Infinite didn't seem to care that much and was more angry about the loss of pride rather than the loss of life

I think the whole issue is that the Shadow thing was clearly an after though.

Episode Shadow was done because fans wanted him.

Possibly, in the original plot, Shadow had nothing to do with Infinite.

Infinite was just another powerful enough villain Eggman picked up, thinking to exploit him (and as usual things backfired him)

Otherwise I can't explain why he had a beef with Sonic while Shadow was just 'one of many' in the main plot. and why he seems to not care about his squad. Because he never had one before 'episode Shadow'.

I don't know how much of an afterthought it was when Episode Shadow launched alongside the main game and the Looming Shadows tie-in comic was already out.

Once he became Infinite and had his fun with Shadow, he moved beyond that because his power made him overcome the feeling of weakness. Not unlike Infinite letting Sonic live later because he didn't consider him a threat. I didn't get the impression of Infinite having beef with Sonic until maybe after being beaten by him, and then that's just pride.

They could've done a lot better on the writing in a lot of places, but Episode Shadow was definitely the highlight.
