Hihi, do you have any writing advice for a beginner?
Hi baby!!! πΥ. .Υπ¦―
My #1 bit of advice is -> You're gonna hear a LOT about "said is dead" as you get started. Take those lists as ideas, not a rule.
Pleasepleaseplease do not be afraid of the word said!!! I do not care if I see the word "said" five times in a sentence, but it gets really annoying and makes your work seem lower quality if your dialog read as follows:
"Yo yo what's up?" The man exclaimed
"Not much, you?" The woman inquired
"Just bought a new car, feelin' good!" The man shouted
It's better to sprinkle speech tags to add emphasis, and use actions in your dialog, me thinks. Like this:
"Yo yo what's up?" The man greeted, walking in the door and flopping onto the couch
The woman rolled her eyes - but there was no heat behind it. She gazed at him fondly. "Not much, you?"
"Just bought a new car, feelin' good!" He said, tossing an arm behind his head.
But adjust to whatever fits your style and the vibes you wanna give off! This was also a crappy scene to use as an example anyway, but, lmao.
Also -> A lot of learning to write is just playing around with different styles and ideas to find what you like best. Don't be obsessed with being "perfect" - that's very subjective. Focus on writing what *you* wanna read!!
The best thing I learned from fanfiction is to write for yourself first. People can always tell the difference when the writer is into a fic, or if they're just writing it because it's what the people want. And people love things that were created with passion!!
Plus it opens you up to find like-minded people! A lot of the connections I've made through writing were made because I wrote whatever silly little ideas I wanted for myself instead of doing what everyone else was into at the time
