Oh shit, those motherfuckers be eating
BONE
honestly with the red eyes and black lines around them, and the general coloring of the feathers, you’re right and you should say it.
I just saw your post about how Asra's name would be pronounced in Arabic. I'm confused on how other people say it and how you would say it l. Cause in my mind I've always pronounced it (Az-ruh). I just want to learn more. FEED ME KNOWLEDGE.....please
Hi, this vlog has been dead for a long time, so sorry you’re getting an extremely late response anon. (This isn’t a revival of this blog either, so if you’d rather unfollow me bc I’m not active here, I totally understand).
So as I mentioned in my post, people who speak English will generally say Asra’s name like Az-ruh with a z. Again, this is because it sounds more natural in English (think of the word Islam or the name Isaiah, the s in each word is pronounced as a z).
In Arabic however, pronouncing his name would be closer to “Ah-s-ruh”. The “s” is not a “z”, it’s just a pure “s” sound.
The “ah” is closer to an in between of “uh” and “ah”, because his name isn’t pronouned with the typical “ah” sound. So it’s not like when you have to say “ahh” when a doctor checks your throat, or a tall “ah” when someone sings opera. It’s different. This is because of the letter أ in his name (which is called an aleph with a hamza). It makes a really specific sound that doesn’t particularly exist in English. It kind of sort of almost does but not quite.
If you want to hear how that first letter is pronounced, watch this youtube video (https://youtu.be/V9ootwKTuQU). It’s the very first letter in the word, and that’s how I would pronounce the first “a” in Asra’s name in Arabic. I hope this helped. If you’re still confused, feel free to message me.
“I love you.”
This took longer than it should. Here's the first Arcana fanart post no one asked for! LOL
Asra Speaking Arabic Headcanons
I don’t know how I haven’t seen this yet, but I feel obliged to rectify it.
- he desperately wishes he spoke his mother language, but because he lost his parents (due to a certain goat) he doesn’t know it too well in his young age
- he tries, he really does, finding books to learn the alphabet, and read and write
- but it’s so different from the Vesuvian language, and he can’t just figure it all out
- plus, he doesn't have his parents to teach him any pronunciation, so speech and comprehension are both just out the window after a year or two
- his early years were spent just trying to survive, and the most beneficial language to know when you’re starving is the language of the place you’re currently in
- later on though, when his life stablized more, he finally began learning some in his travels
- he listened to the locals talk, spoke with children, wrote sentences he knew were completely wrong, and spent weeks at a time when he was in his home country so he could get used to hearing the language
- through years of work, passive learning, reading and talking, he could finally call himself fluent again
- you’d never even know really, he speaks like a native
- while he loves his language, however, there’s always a bit of melancholy to it
- he wishes his parents were there to speak to so much
- he also learned a lot of Arabic from poetry, and while it tends to be beautiful, there’s almost always a heavy sort of bittersweetness, the words ripe with regret and longing
- but when he hears it at any sort of festival/celebration, it’s the most vivid, lively language he could ever imagine
- also little known fact, when he and Faust communicate, it’s an Arabic
- yes i’m headcanoning that Faust is bilingual it’s not impossible
- if you don’t know the language and ask him to teach you, he will happily oblige
- won’t stress much on reading/writing because A) it’s a complicated mess and B) you won’t see it too much in Vesuvia anyway
- teaches you phrases he hears you say a lot, phrases he says a lot, domestic things like types of food, furniture, common items, etc.
- does not care if you butcher the pronunciation, he’ll just gently correct you. no condescension, no laughing, no shame
- he finds it endearing actually
- butchering the pronunciation means you’re genuinely trying, and attempting the word and getting embarassed when you say it wrong is infinitely better than just never trying it at all
- also before you look for that “curses in his mother language when angry” headcanon, i’m just gonna tell you that that does not exist for a lot of bi/multilingual people and it doesn’t exist for him either unless he can comfortably communicate with you in Arabic
- (i’m not saying no multilingual person does that ever though stop yelling at me in the notes)
- i will say though, if you can/learn to say his name in his native accent, you will unlock an entirely new level of intimacy with him
- and i don’t mean sexual intimacy i mean just straight up general intimacy and trust
- learning someone else’s language when you care about them is a huge sign of respect and commitment for the most part, so if you put in that effort he will be elated
- favorite nickname would for you would probably be “يا قلبي" (ya qalbi/ya albi)
- why you ask?
- it means “my heart” :)
- also im just gonna say, modern asra? he would be playing songs from Fairouz 24/7
- never took any Arabic courses in school/college but he’s on a first name basis with the all the teachers/professors for them
- he walks in at random hours in between classes when he’s bored and helps anybody who asks
- if you’re in a relationship with him, you’ll know when it becomes a serious one as soon as he starts calling you “habibi/habibti”
- is it cliché? yeah. but i’ll tell you this, he’s never called julian that. no friend-with-benefits gets that name
Hope you enjoyed!
Hot take
(I haven’t played asras route in a while I’m sorry)
OK TANGENT but I was literally just working on Asra speaking Arabic headcanons (because I’ve never seen them before somehow?) and I hit a pit where I assumed he didn’t know his language well because he was separated from his parents and couldn’t learn, but remembered reading a post saying he spoke multiple languages?? I assume he learned what he knows from his travels but its just confusing here.
Anyway, the point. Let me at least preface that I’m an Arabic speaker and I’ll try my best to explain this as best as I can. But I mean, it’s difficult to write down how to pronounce something.
When I say Asra’s name in English, I say it with the letter z, so Azra essentially. When I say it in Arabic, I pronounce it in a different way, but I’ll explain that later.
In English, if there’s an “s” in the middle of the word, the language really lends itself to changing it to a “z” sound to make it flow better within its lingual confines. A perfect example of this is the word “Muslim”. In English, that “s” is pronounced as a “z” because it just sounds more natural, but in Arabic, it’s a solid “s”. This is why a lot of English speakers probably feel more comfortable saying his name like this.
Ok, now onto Arabic. His name in its original spelling is أسرى. The “a” is أ . The “s” is س . The “r” is ر . And the last “a” is ى.
If you haven’t noticed, the two letters that make “a” are different, and they actually produce slightly different sounds. The first one is alef with a hamza, and the second is alef maksura. The best way I can tell you how the first one is pronounced is the “a” in “attend”. It has a glottal, sort of abrupt stop at the end in both languages. “S” is pronounced like a normal “s”, no “z”. “R” is crisp, almost like rolling your r’s, but only ONCE if that makes sense. I have no other way to explain that. And finally, the last “a” is actually closer to an “uh” sound. Yes, like the filler you’re not supposed to use too much of when you speak. In Arabic, it’s not quite as slow or lazy sounding, but with a kind of pointed tone.
I’m sorry if all that was confusing, but again, super difficult to explain how to pronounce things in text. If you only get one thing from this, it’s not “ahsra” with a long and elegant “ah” sound, it’s not “assra” where the beginning of his name is pronounced like “ass”, nor is it technically “azra” if you’re talking about Arabic pronunciation. Unfortunately, you can’t really denote such subtle differences in English since the languages are so far from each other.
Again, I think the most comfortable thing for English speakers would be “Azra” since I know from experience that’s how the language lends itself. If you want to use the strong “s”, that also works too. At the end of the day, you can’t really ask him what he would prefer because he’s fictional, but usually in a situation like this you would likely ask a person how they would prefer you to speak their name. Hope this was helpful!
if you didn’t have nightmares before you do now
Since you guys loved these
I thought I’d make another batch :)
Enjoy
Happy (VERY) belated Birthday Julian !! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the gorgeous artist and cosplayer Burningheartscosplay (on Instagram) too !! 🎂🎈🎉🎉🎉
I’m having a big artblock since the first announce of the government about the virus (I’m living in France) and it’s hard for me to find some time for myself since I have young kids at home (my youngest has 2 years old) and I’m trying to do my best to lighten the confinement for them 💗
So I told to myself, at least let’s party with Julian and The Arcana’s cast at the Rowdy Raven !!! 🎉😆 (-background is from @thearcanagame cause I’m a lazy ass this time XD)
Love on you everyone, I hope you are all safe 🤗
Julian: *aggressively banging phone against the desk*
MC: Don't be mean to the poor thing! How would you like it if I banged you against the desk??

Julian: I don't know the right answer to that question.
Saw this format and decided the arcana needs one too. Tried new coloring because I finally accept that I can’t shade even to save my life.
