Passive vs. Active Learning for digital learners
Intriguing your digital learners, how do we teach? Shall we have passive or active learners? It’s too easy to just stare at a monitor and space out. As facilitators we need to actively engage the learner to participate even in an online environment. We need to be promoting more compared to in-class sessions. Try utilizing webinar software with interactive capabilities, prompt learners out of their comfortable chairs and try various post-assessment techniques like using Kahoot for review. Having an active learner is more beneficial for the overall learning experience with all learners in the online session. Also, an active approach is proven to improved participation, engagement and knowledge retention.

2021 Trends in aviation industry
With a slow start to 2021, still big and bold predictions are to be said about the aviation industry in 2021. Travel in business and leisure will surge with pent-up travellers that saved during the pandemic and airlines to resume pre-pandemic flights by 2024. Wide-body aircraft manufacturing can see slower recovery compared to narrow-body aircraft; this all because the mid-range international routes will be first to recover. The current vaccine efficacy reported at 90% effectiveness will bolster public confidence to return to leisure flying. With the FAA approving BVLOS rules for drone use, we will see increased use of drones in commercial and industrial applications. Let’s hope the future of aviation recovers as many livelihoods also depend on the industry.

The current crisis is forcing our educational institutions to change faster than we ever thought possible To understand what the future might look like, we took a look at the trends in education that followed our most recent financial crisis, and those that we’re starting to see today.
Trends in adult online education.
You can call it remote learning or online learning; it is the new norm of continued adult education. Small and large colleges have quickly switched to remote learning due to the pandemic. Giving students the flexibility and intensified short-term programs they want to increase their value and marketability while requiring less time. The online programs can lack the counseling area for students where they become focused on the learning and miss the realities of what the job entails. Some schools have included additional programs to prepare students with current industry experts to give them better ideas of what is required of skills and job requirements. As an educator, we can better present the real-world situation during our lessons to reveal what the job includes. Also continually acquiring new skills and information in the industry, benefits the educator and learner at the same time.

How is technology revolutionizing aviation training? The next generation of AMEs are different from the blackboard & chalk era. They employ technology as their second language and utilize it as an extension of their tools. Embracing technology and being part of the trend is when we will better understand, transcribe and convey our knowledge and experiences. We now balance privacy and innovation to increase our information gathering to provide accurate outcomes. The quality of data is proportional to the quality of information received. The data collected reveals our errors then are improved. Instructors able to adapt and integrate the technology into methods of instructions will help foster new AMEs.

Raised in the lower mainland, lived across the country for my career, traveled the world for my career and now finally settled down with a family of 5. Throughout the process it has been lots of ups and downs but it has been a great ride. Started out #aviation at BCIT, left aviation for a moment but returned for the passion and had too relocate to continue my career. Came along the wife, twins and the boy. Enjoying the busy family life and cherishing every moment it gives me. Currently given a second chance to continue my passion for the industry in another form. Completing the PID will enable me to continue my passion for aviation.
