Kieran has been protective of Lauren from the very beginning. We constantly see him worrying about her; he tries to keep her as safe as possible under all circumstances, and when she’s shot, no one’s eyes are more terrified than his.

But not once does he try to convince her that they should call off their deal. When he stops by to check on her at the factory (just a few hours after he last saw her), he offers her his apartment or the cave as places where she can take refuge if the real world becomes too much for her, but he doesn’t say a word about how it would be better for her to stay away from him.

That only comes when he realizes how close Lauren has gotten to him and, above all, how close he’s let her get. What Kieran fears most, what compels him to run away, to push Lauren from him, are his own feelings.

He’s not used to them; he’s learned to lock them away and avoid the pain they cause—and suddenly, he can’t do it anymore. And that scares him.

I'm looking back at episode 43 rn and oh my god throughout that chapter kieran exclusively refers to lauren by her name, not ever using her titles like he normally has done before, and also does after

In S1, their communication is really poor, and it's not just this scene, but all of their hilarious attempts to interrogate someone together. It gets better over time, not because they find some magical way to understand each other,

but because they both make a huge effort to pay attention to each other's feelings and reactions. This is also one of the things I love about them. Nothing in their relationship is free, all the progress is earned and hard-won, but the result is one of the best-matched couples, who seem like they've known each other for years.
