There was external factors that led to [my eating disorder]. A lot of anorexia nervosa can come from control issues or something you’ve inherited but in my case, I believe it was from external factors. I broke my back at 17 [in a car crash] and it changed my relationship with my body. It probably saved my life otherwise I’d still be anorexic now. I learned how to appreciate my body that I had taken hugely for granted and actively hurting for so long. Ăn Khế Trả Vàng (trans. “Gold for Starfruit”)

Also known as Sự Tích Cây Khế (The Story of the Starfruit Tree), this fable teaches a lesson on greed. It follows the life of two brothers who lost their mother when they were young, and thus were raised by their father. Shortly after the brothers married, their father grew ill and passed away, leaving what property and estate he had left in the hands of his sons.

Influenced by the greed of his wife, the older brother claimed full ownership of the estate, giving his younger brother and sister-in-law only a small bit of land with a starfruit tree. Despite knowing he had been duped and gotten the short end of the stick, the younger brother made the best with what he had– building a hut for shelter and working jobs in the field to make what little money he could. 

When the starfruit tree finally grew fruit one season, the couple was ecstatic, planning to sell the starfruit at the market to make some extra money. But as the husband climbed the tree to pick the fruits, a giant bird appeared and began eating all the fruit! The husband, knowing this tree was the only thing that could help them financially, begged the bird to stop eating, telling it that if it ate all the fruit they would have nothing left to sell, and to show them mercy because they were very poor.

Upon hearing the pleas, the giant bird replied, “a piece of gold for every starfruit, sew a three-span bag to bring with you. Tomorrow morning I will come to take you.”
